Judith With the Head of Holofernes, Lucas Cranach the Elder, Germany, ca. 1530

This painting is of Judith, a biblical character, and the head of an Assyrian General, Holofernes. This painting features graphic details or macabre which is commonly featured in Northern European Artwork. I chose this painting because it depicts a woman participating in war, something a man usually does. This painting did not try to masculinize her, but actually emphasizes her femininity through her clothing. I think it is a very powerful image because it shows that women do not have to change themselves to fill these roles.

The Painters Father, Albrecht Dürer, 1497

This painting exemplifies many Northern Renaissance qualities. It depicts Dürers father who is in his 70s, and the painting does not even in the slightest try to idealize him or hide his age. Paintings from this period and region emphasized the ordinary and natural. It was not uncommon for painters to paint peasants and other figures who did not hold large amounts of power. I believe paintings like this were able to capture moments of life during this period, and hold more value than paintings of aristocrats and kings.

Landscape with Tournament and Hunters, Jan van Scorel, Netherlands, 1519-20

This oil painting offers a snap shot into the pastimes and culture of the period. Northern painting practices like atmosphere perspective are featured in the painting to help convince the viewer of the scale of the painting. It also gives historical context about who participated in these events through the clothing of viewers in the painting. Their lavish clothes suggest that these people were wealthy.
