Voice is something that is hard to define, but you know it when you hear/read it. If you have a favorite author, you could probably take the name away and still know who it is. For example, if I read a Hemingway passage or Salinger or Margaret Atwood, I know the author from his/her voice. You establish voice by being confident in what you are writing about. Stephen King says, as you read, that he believes that "fear is at the root of most bad writing." Voice is also established by word choice and sentence structure. It separates your writing from the crowd.

While it’s not the easiest thing to do, being vulnerable in your writing can be very important. Revealing the true thoughts or stories of your life, either good or bad, is a way to have the reader connect and relate to how the writer truly feels. It’s much easier to read a passage that makes you visualize and feel what the author is talking about. I believe that being vulnerable as a writer helps the reader understand the true feelings the writer is going through, making it easier to connect and stay interested in the authors story.

1. An element of good writing that I always look for is a strong, creative narrative voice. Whether it’s an academic or creative paper, the voice of the author defines how their writing is perceived by the audience. I find it really compelling when the writer peppers in personal and subjective experiences as well, for it allows the reader to connect further with the author. Instead of the author just being another voice in the crowd, adding personal opinions makes the reader separate the voice from the hundreds that they’ve read before. If it is an academic paper, as long as the author brings factual evidence with their opinion it is warranted.

2. My approach to writing for academic classes is to always make an outline before I start actually writing my paper. I find it so much easier to organize my ideas first than to just jump into it. Additionally, I usually write my body paragraphs before my thesis, since the body paragraphs will ultimately edit and alter the final thesis.

1. One element of good writing that I value when reading is good organization. The text could have some really great or interesting points, however, if it's not organized well, it can become very hard to read. Also, if the text is unorganized, you can lose the attention of the reader.

2. When I approach academic writing, I like to first decide my topic, and then research whatever I am going to write about. When I research, I like to just write notes and bullet points of what I've learned and and helpful quotes. Eventually, once I have all of my information that I need, I make and outline of how I want to organize the paper. Once the outline is done, I fill in the information and my own ideas to create my paper.

I get very bored very easily. It’s the main reason I do not like reading or writing. When I read things, be it an academic paper or fictional writing, I look for details! Details help me focus on something and concentrate on the bigger picture. I also appreciate straightforward and direct writing. I guess that isn’t always going to be the case, especially when it comes to my history major, but I digress.

Most of my writing in college has been in my history classes. When writing those papers, I start by finding decent enough sources of information, and of course, I try to outline my paper. I write out main ideas and the order I want to present them. I tend to have a problem with writing succinctly and not really going deeply into the information I present.

Authority is an element I look for in good writing. Sometimes writers have a tendency to come across like they do not trust themselves, or believe in the topic that they are writing about. These elements make it challenging for readers to engage with their article, story, poem, etc. When a writer has authority they become more reliable. This is an especially important quality to have for persuasive and informative pieces.

When it comes to academic writing I like to focus on concision. I am a journalism major, so this is a big part of the writing I do. Getting across a strong point in a little words as possible is the easiest way to ensure a reader understands. The New York Times is written at an 8th grade reading level. Sometimes, omitting fancy words and cutting sentences makes for the best piece of writing.

If an authors writing is all over the place then it may be hard to understand the message they are trying to get across which is very important. If the reader has to keep rereading to understand what is going on then the message could get lost.

2. My approach to academic writing is usually to have a detailed outline of what I want to write about so I can get all my ideas down before I put them all together. My brain works a lot fast than I can write or type so just to have my ideas down is really helpful before I start writing. This helps to organize my thoughts and make sure that I include everything I want to say.

Sometimes one may read something and not be able to grasp their attention and keep them engaged to therefore allow then to complete the entire reading. Organization is also a major element since it can make or break the message the writer is trying to convey.
2. My approach to academic writing is to make sure I have a clear thought and outline of what my plans and intentions are for the paper. Having a clear approach and main goal of my paper helps me stay on track of what I need to be writing about.

An element of good writing that I look for is the organization of a paper and whether or not the author gets their point across concisely. This is because with good organization usually comes a better paper. My papers used to be all over the place till I focused specifically on keeping my papers better organized. I also look for getting the point across concisely because it will allow the reader to understand the main purpose of the paper a lot quicker and more easily.

2. My approach to academic writing is to try getting my point across as clearly as possible. I try to use as little filler as I can so that my point does not come across as weak or not very well thought through.

1. One element of good writing that I often look for in any paper is structure and organization. When a paper is not properly structured in a good manner it can ruin the entire point of the paper. It can cause a reader to lose focus or lose the objective the writer is trying to portray. A paper can become hard to follow if the structure is not in order.
2. My approach to academic writing is to always first have my paper outlined before I even begin writing. Once I have a solid outline I can then begin writing and following the structure I have laid out for myself. This helps me as a writer and the readers to be able to properly follow the point I am making. I also focus on finding the best way to capture a readers attention from the first sentence.

When reading a piece of writing, I look for the voice of the author. I love reading pieces that incorporate a sense of personal connection between the reader and the author. When an author writes as if they’re speaking directly to me or as if we know each other on a personal level, I think that brings a feeling of vivaciousness and makes the work seem energized with the spirit and personality of the author. While being too casual in writing is almost never a good thing, I think there’s a line you can straddle that makes the readers feel comfortable and connected, while still maintaining control and authority. I enjoy being able to see bits of the author’s personality as I read their work.

When writing for academic classes, I tend to try to find an interesting angle for my approach to the prompt or assignment. Of course, I figure out what my thesis is going to be and then break it down piece by piece in my body paragraphs, fleshing out the details involved in each part. I like using a good amount of examples that I can tie back into the main point of my paper because I think doing so helps to supplement my writing and make it more tangible for readers. I also like to add in my personal voice when appropriate. Like I said in my first response, I think having that connection, even if it’s very small, can help to elevate your writing.

1. Being able to intrigue an audience is an important element of writing. A writer has to intrigue me from the beginning in order for me to be interested and want to continue reading. Many times when reading a paper or an article, I have forgotten and wondered off about what I was reading because it didn’t catch my attention. I think that it is so important to keep the reader engaged, but make sure to keep the paper structured and not throw in random information to keep the reader interested.
2. My approach to writing for academic classes is to make sure I have most, if not all, the information needed to complete the paper. If the audience doesn't understand what you're trying to say in your writing, you might as well have not written anything at all. Being able to communicate your message clearly and concisely is an incredibly important element of writing that connects the reader with the author of the piece.
2. My approach to writing for academic classes includes first taking down notes about some of the main points I want to include in my writing. Then, I proceed to jot down some facts to support whatever claim I might be making. Finally, I try to construct my essay by plugging in the facts and important aspects into my piece and trying to join them together with sentences that connect to the subject of the essay.

1. The main element I usually search for when reading a writing is the clarity of purpose of the work. Every writing has a goal, or a set idea that is trying to be conveyed. Poor writers often meander around the point in their writing, either not quite knowing what they are trying to say or not knowing how to say it. A good writer will be clear and precise throughout, always connecting their sections of writing to the overall point without forcing it.
2. When writing for academic classes, I do my best to approach it with absolute clarity on my overall point and how each paragraph contributes to achieving this point. Whether it is scientific writing or literature, everything in the paper should have a purpose, and I do my best to prevent any filler from wasting the valuable pages I have to use.

1. The one element of "good writing" that I always look for is diction, or the author's choice of words. The diction of a piece of writing conveys a message for the auditor, establishes the author's purpose, and sets the tone. The choice of words can also capture the attention of the auditor, as well as direct the attention to certain aspects of a story. Personally, when I am reading an article that uses extensive vocabulary, the author appeals to ethos as it influences my perception of them as credible and educated. A good writer uses diction to utilize Aristotle's three modes of persuasion, influencing the reader to feel a certain way.
2. When it comes to writing for academic classes, I always make an outline. Not only does an outline provide structure for my thoughts, but it also helps me make sure I cover everything I wanted to. Personally, having an outline also alleviates the challenge of figuring out how to transition into different topics since I put thought into the disposition of my main points before writing.
