1. Thoreau bought his cottage on Walden Pond from an Irishman named James Collins. He believed that living so close to nature and away from the hustle of city life would be beneficial to both his body and his mind. Thoreau lived in the cottage for just over two years, and considered it extraordinarily helpful to his writing career. In the Economy passage, he discusses every day life at Walden, and all the work that goes into it.

1. There are many ants that go to war against each other in order to survive. Thoreau describes them as an army with the quote "conquer or die" as their battle cry. In addition to the ants who are fighting for survival, there is a time where Thoreau is surrounded by nature in a way that he is boating in a pond, and observes the gracefulness and interesting way the loon (ducks) dive and approach where he is paddling. In the conclusion, Thoreau experiences the sylvan landscape near a cabin. He thinks about life's questions and how the life in us is like the water in the river, with waves, floods, dry land, etc. He concludes his questions about life by saying that "the sun is but a morning star."

1. Thoreau contemplates his surroundings and reflects how they are different from the modern world where most people dwell. He considers what it means to be alone and reflects on this intimate relationship with nature, particularly his bean field.

2. See pictures

3. "We live meanly, like ants" (Thoreau 220). " I passed it again the other day, and was struck with awe on looking up and beholding that mark" (Thoreau 221). "Daily the beans saw me come to their rescue with a hoe" (224).

4.
- He clearly values nature and this is evident in every section that I read.
- I can see how his theories would be revolutionary for his time.
- It was interesting how he could take the tiniest detail and make it symbolize something profound.
- He clearly had a mission to improve his happiness and satisfaction with his lifestyle.

5.
- He valued the simple life.
- He was not satisfied with modern society.
- He was perfectly content alone.
- He grew very fond of his bean field.
- He demonstrated his connection to nature in all he did.
