This section was a window because I personally have never really gone through the things that Jeanette has gone through in this section. I think it was definitely interesting and kinda sad how her mom really doesn't car about her kids and how she just lets them do whatever they want especially at the age of 3 I thought it was interesting how she would make her own hot dogs. I knew that it happens but reading it from the perspective of someone that it actually happened to gives another sort of feeling. My family is different to Jeanette's family because my family doesn't really move around from town to town and we have a stable place to live but a way I can relate is that I consider myself close to my dad although my dad is not really anything like Jeanette's dad.

One social issue that was present in this chunk of reading that we read was social class. It was present because the text shows how Jeannette's family struggles to make enough money to have a stable place to live. Her dad's reaction to the doctors that treated her and the policeman that pulled them over shows how he doesn't like people who have a higher social class (more money and power) than him. It was very present in the characters lives because their social class is very low and it shows because of the fact that they don't have a stable place to live. Also when they don't have enough money to pay medical bills so her dad sneaks her out of the hospital and when Brian cut his head open they didn't take him to the hospital but just took him to a voodoo doctor.

Jeanette has been in the hospital for a while and now better but since her parents don't have enough money to pay the hospital bills he dad breaks her out and while he's carrying her out she explains "As he held me close, I breathed in his familiar smell of Vitalis, whiskey, and cigarette smoke. It reminded me of home." (Walls, 14) This quote stood out to me because I think it shows how her home isn't really the most kid friendly place and how her dad is kind of like her home. I think it shows how she is close to her dad and how her only sense and idea of home is based around her dad.

1. How effective is the author’s use of dialogue? How does dialogue enhance the storytelling?

   The author's use of dialogue is effective because it allows the reader to get to know the characters more. It enhances the storytelling because it gives a personality to the people in the memoir and helps show their emotions and thoughts. It also enhances the story because it shows why Jeannette feels the way she feels about her parents and siblings and why their relationships are the way they are.

   Some figures of speech used in the Glass Castle are metaphors, similes, personification and imaginary. The author uses imaginary to enhance the writing and give the story more depth and character as well to make the reader imagine what is happening and to make it more realistic.

3. Choose a significant event that occurs in your reading. What do you think the author's purpose was in telling that part of the story?

   One significant event that happened in the Glass Castle so far was when Jeannette as a 3 year old was making her own hot dogs and badly burnt herself and had to go to the hospital. I think the author's purpose in telling this part of the story was to show a glimpse of how her parents are. For example it shows that her mom doesn't cook for them and has them do their own thing while she does what she wants and paints instead of watching over her kids. When Jeannette is better and ready to be discharged he dad breaks her out secretly which shows how he doesn't have money to pay the hospital bills and how he runs away from his problems and his reaction to doctors show how he doesn't like people who have more power or money than him.
