Malcolm X was born in Omaha, Nebraska in 1925. His name at birth was Malcolm Little. As a civil rights activist, later in life, Malcolm changed his last name to X to demonstrate rejection of his "slave" name. He later changed his name again to El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz. "Malcolm joined the Nation of Islam (NOI) while serving a prison term in Massachusetts on burglary charges. Shortly after his release in 1952, he moved to Chicago and became a minister under Elijah Muhammad" (https://kinginstitute.stanford.edu/encyclopedia/malcolm-x). Malcolm X was an activist fighting against police brutality and was an active part of developing BLM movement. "His advocacy of achieving 'by any means necessary' put him at the opposite end of the spectrum from Martin Luther King, Jr.’s nonviolent approach to gaining ground in the growing civil rights movement" (history.com editors). After many years of believing and following the teachings of Elijah Muhammad, head of the Lost-Found Nation of Islam (Black Muslims) a Black nationalist group that claimed white people are the devil, in 1964, Malcolm X founded the Organization of Afro-American Unity, which said that racism, instead of the white race, is the enemy of justice. "Malcolm X was assassinated by a Black Muslim at an Organization of Afro-American Unity rally in the Audubon Ballroom in New York City on February 21, 1965" (history.com editors).

In traditional school we learn A LOT about Martin Luther King Jr. and his approach as a civil rights activist, but i'd never learned about Malcolm X or his part in the civil rights movement. I wonder if this is because Malcolm X took a less "non-violent" approach when he originally started fighting for civil rights.

After learning about Malcolm X i'm disappointed that his work isn't taught more in schools. I'm also surprised that in recent years when the BLM movement had become more active, that more people weren't referencing or talking about the works of Malcolm X.

Lastly, even though I don't particularly support violence when fighting for what you believe in, I find it very interesting and honestly sad, that over 50 years after Malcolm X was assassinated, we are still fighting very similar battles to those that he fought.
