They will use measurement skills to create pipes of varying lengths.

Cross-Curricular Connections:

Math- Basic measurement, pattern recognition, addition and subtraction

Science- Sound energy and vibration.

Art and Music- how instrument designs create different sounds.

Materials:

Pipes (bamboo, plastic, paper)

Molding Clay

Sticky Dots or Glue

Popsicle Sticks

Hook:

Do-Re-Mi video clip from Sound of Music

Important Vocabulary:

Pitch: How high or low a sound is

Tone: The quality of a musical note

Vibration: The back-and-forth motion that creates sound

Dynamics: The volume of the music, indicating how loud or soft the sound is

Assessment:

Participation, completion of panpipe

Activity Instructions:

Find an area to work

Collect 5 straws (in different lengths), 1 stick of clay, 2 popsicle sticks, 1 roll of tape, and 2 rows of sticky dots.

Cut each straw where you see the black line

Use the half that has a black dot

Make a clay cap

Line up the straws from longest to shortest

Place each straw on a sticky dot along the popsicle stick, leaving about ½ inch of straw extending above the popsicle stick.

Place the second popsicle stick on top of the straws, aligning it with the bottom popsicle stick to sandwich the straws in place.

Adaptations:

Use Different Materials

Emphasize the math component by having students measure their pipe lengths and calculate ratios between different lengths

Turn it into more of a science experiment where students explore how the sound pitch is created

For the next music lesson, you could have students use their created Pan Pipes to make/play songs
