(Richard Connell) This quote tells us that you have to choose another way to not be hunted. Such as Rainsford swam instead of walking because it would be more difficult to navigate. While swimming takes more energy than walking.

The general hunted people for fun. When Rainsford was being hunted, he had to be ahead of the general to survive. Such as when he arrived in the bedroom when the general didn't notice.

An another time this symbol is shown is when Rainsford is running from the General Zaroff. The first thing Rainsford does that is smart is when he kills the General dogs by a sandpit . Also there the time when Rainsford made a trap called  the burmese tiger pit and kills Ivan
