Dyslexia is one of the most common language based learning disabilities.
It is most commonly discovered during the school-ages.
The myth is that boys are more likely to have it than girls. This myth is said to be told due to the fact that boys act out more when they don't understand something, though on the other hand girls tend to hide it.

Of people with reading difficulties, 70-80% are likely to have some form of dyslexia. It is estimated that between 5-10% of the population has dyslexia, but this number can also be as high as 17%.

It is thought to be caused by impairment in the brain's ability to process phonemes, but the cause varies from each type:
Primary dyslexia: Most research focuses on hereditary factors. Also caused by a dysfunction of, rather than damage to, the left side of the brain (cerebral cortex) and does not change with age.

Developmental Dyslexia: Caused by problems with brain development during early stages of fetal development.

Trauma dyslexia: Occurs after some form of brain trauma, usually damage to the left parietal lobe. This one is rarely seen in today's school-age population.
