The theme of this week is: COMPLICATION.

The work we do is not straightforward or easy or clear cut. It is messy and full of contradictions and layered and hard. So, I give you two things to read and think about this week -- two different examples of 'this shit gets messy'.

The first is Tanya Talaga (journalist and author of Seven Fallen Feathers) being awarded an honorary doctorate by X University today.

The second is the controversy around Chimamnda Ngozi Adichie's transphobic feminism at the same time as knowing the value that her work has (or has had) in some of our classrooms when we needed Black feminist voices and clear lessons on 'single stories'. (I have personally used her Ted Talk in my classroom and I know others have, too.)

I offer Talaga's own words on why she has chosen to accept the doctorate, and the words of Keguro Macharia on Adichie in the context of legibility and working across difference toward freedom.

I hope these offer additions to your own thoughts. (Machari's article linked in next post)

(content: reference to colonial violence, genocide)
