Taylor Mace

2/21/18

B2

Heer, Jeet. "Televising Footage of Shootings Does More Harm than Good." Opposing Viewpoints Online Collection, Gale, 2018. Opposing Viewpoints in Context, http://link.galegroup.com/apps/doc/DXLYSO661297213/OVIC?u=bcps&xid=a4547a48. Accessed 21 Feb. 2018. Originally published as "Don’t Circulate Videos of the TV News Killing in Virginia," New Republic, 26 Aug. 2015.

The main idea of this article is that the media should stop broadcasting videos and images of mass murders and shootings. When the footage is broadcasted it becomes disrespectful and harmful to the victims and their loved ones and it also gives the shooter the exposure that they had hoped for. Some who are opposed to this idea argue that the video highlight the need for stricter gun laws. There are also political arguments being made because when you show these types of images it may help clarify factual issues but they never have a clear political meaning. At the end of the day it is impossible to fully banish such images but in the future that may change.

The author of this article is Jeet Heer who is an author and senior editor at the New Republic. I believe that this makes Heer’s viewpoint unbiased because the company he works for has nothing to do with gun violence. His viewpoint is one he states very passionately because he truly believes that showing footage of shootings has done nothing to stop them from happening again. I believe that this information and evidence is relevant to my research on gun violence because Heer uses previous evidence of mass murders such as Sandy Hook to show that gun violence is a true problem.

I believe this article is very useful in providing me with research and evidence for my argument. This article provides a lot of useful factual evidence from previous shootings and mass murders. When an article uses facts it makes it easier to determine your opinion because you’re going off of stuff that actually happened rather than the author’s opinion. This article also helps me understand the opposing views because Heer’s states some reasons why people believe in showing footage of mass murders.

Accessed 21 Feb. 2018.

The United States leads the world with more gun related homicides and suicides than any other country. Guns are responsible for over 33,000 deaths in the United States. Out of 15,872 homicides, 11,008 involved a firearm and out of 42,826 suicides, 21,386 involved a firearm. These statistics have inspired efforts at the state level to enact gun control legislation to reduce crime and violence. Supporters of gun control seek tighter restrictions on the sale and circulation of firearms.

There is no specific author of this informative text, but the source is the Gale Group. This text doesn’t have a tone because it is just stating all facts. The information in this is relevant because this is the topic I want to use for my PBA. The evidence provided is the massacres that have happened in the past 6 years and the results. One example provided is the mass shooting in 2012 at Sandy Hook Elementary. 20 students and 6 staff members were killed. After this, Obama introduced a bill to expand background checks, limit ammunition capacity, and improving coverage and quality of mental care.

This article is very useful, containing a lot of important facts about gun laws, massacres that happened, and the results. This article helps me to understand the opposing views because it gives examples of how people questioned the people in charge. Gun right advocates doubted Obama’s sincerity and accused him of politicizing the Sandy Hook tragedy. Some also say that this massacre was staged to advocate gun control legislation. I personally don’t think that guns k_ill people, people k_ll people. I feel as though a knife could do just as much damage.

I say its worth examining”.

If there is a police presence in the school, itll give a feeling of protection to students around the school that if anything goes down there’ll be some sort of comfort in the madness. SROs main job is to keep students safe at all times and if their is none there then protection will be reduced. Reducing the number of guns will reduce the number of murders right? Wrong. No matter what people will find a way to get a gun illegally. What needs to happen is that the background checks need to be more intense. Look into social medias, former charges, and other things to make sure that this person is 100% mentally stable to own a gun especially like Assault Rifles.

The author, Steve Adubato used to be a New Jersey state legislator and news anchor that argues that the number of guns should be reduced as well as the boost in SROs. The author writes with passion in his article as the Newtown shooting had just occurred. Newtown was the 2nd most deadly school shooting in history . He goes with the cold hard facts. About ARs and the numbers and it made a lot of sense and came together well.

This article is very relevant. Accessed 21 Feb. 2018.

Gun control is being debated on as some believe it is a good idea based on the statistics of deaths and harming’s due to fire arms versus others who believe that gun control impacts their constitutional rights. There were over three thousand deaths due to fire arms. 21,386 out of over 40,000 deaths were 🤬 that involved a gun. Many believe that adding these laws are impacting the second amendment, the right to keep and bear arms. The public believes that this right protects the general population which is why they reject the new gun control policy.

There is no specific author to this article, but is written by Gale Group. These include when the Bill of rights was created, Notable court decisions, gun control laws being created, and the incidents caused from guns. Many important incidents were mentioned to show how devastating the results were that are all caused by fire arms. An example is an incident that occurred in Orlando, Florida when a man shot about 50 people. The gun was bought legally which was a problem seen by many folks.

This articles relevance is major as it is the subject I want to write about it in my PBA. We need to have stricter gun control and stricter background checks to ensure these types massacres don’t occur as often as they have. Its getting easier to obtain access to guns which means the violence rate / mass shooting rate go up. These kids have some very common telltale signs that they are mentally ill/ depressed which could possibly lead into these shootings. They usually get picked on a lot due to size and/or personality . Things like this cannot go unnoticed .

Rita Price is a very credible reporter for the Columbus Dispatch. She uses facts about mental health throughout her article and uses a number of sources to back up her overall statement about the correlation with shootings and mental health. Accessed 26 Feb. 2018.
Throughout many years of war LGBTQ+ groups have participated in the military. Even though it has never been a big deal, many believe that going into the military it is the participants rights on who to tell what their sexuality preference or groups they are among. Advocates believe that men and women should serve without the risk of being harassed or discriminated and get the same benefits as any other participant.

Discrimination shouldn’t have to be faced in the military base revolving around a person’s identity. In 2010, Barack Obama signed a bill banning any revoking of gay, lesbian, or bisexual service members. During Obama’s second term in office a ban was lifted on transgender people from serving in the army. A policy known as “Don’t ask, don’t tell” created by Bill Clinton which forbade military personnel from knowing about a service members sexual orientation or disclosing them because of that very piece of information. Many policies and protests have made progression possible. In 2014, the military employed more than 15,000 transgender participants.

The author mentions many dated facts from the 1920’s to 2015. The author provides information on the progression of LGBTQ+ in the military field. Although it isn’t biased, the style is problem-solution. It starts off explaining the exclusions against this group of people, then, furthering into how policies were created to help the situation. The quality of the evidence allows the reader to realize the struggles that the LGBTQ+ members had to deal with if they wanted to be in the military; being excluded.

This article is not very useful providing search for my research and evidence on my argument. Although, it helps broaden my views on how opposing viewpoints can be right on both sides and how many try to fix and settle the situations.

Opposing Viewpoints in Context, http://link.galegroup.com/apps/doc/BEWZRG584684080/OVIC?u=bcps&xid=edab94dc. Accessed 27 Feb. 2018. Originally published as "Pricey Technology Is Keeping People Alive Who Don’t Want to Live," Wired, 10 Apr. 2017.

The main idea of this article is that life prolonging technologies cause great suffering in terminally ill patients physically and economically. Physicians have become more dependent on medical technology rather than communicating with patients about the dying process. This is not fair to the patients who do not wished to be kept alive by machines. These patients should be able to instead research life-prolonging technologies and should discuss their preferences with loved ones and health care professionals.

The author Jessica Zitter is a physician and an expert on death and dying. She is also the author of Extreme Measures: Finding a Better Path to the End of Life. I believe this makes her very reliable since she is an expert on death and would have a lot of background knowledge. Zitter wants people to be aware of the patient’s wishes when it comes to their deaths and believes that they need to be heard. Because of this I believe that this article is very useful to me and my research. Zitter gives descriptions of various technologies that are being used to keep people alive and describes them in detail.

Zitter provides factual evidence of medical technologies from back in history compared to today. She does this to show the difference in medical technologies from back then to now. Today’s technology now has the ability to keep terminally ill patients alive unlike the technology from the 1930’s and 40’s. Even though she is against this technology Zitter still states that in some cases these machines have benefits especially if the patent wants to be alive.
