Just because someone who is in an authoritative position says they are an expert does not mean it is true. Usually no evidence is provided that the person is an expert, but because they are in a position of power some people will believe them. I choose a picture of Donald Trump. Many people follow him without proof that he knows what he is talking about because he is famous.

This occurs when someone presents their argument with big words and odd terms to make it seem they are correct. When really, they just tire you out with their nonsense and you agree anyways. Just because they overload on the information does not mean they are correct. Before this course I had only heard of this term in math. The person creates such a complex problem that no one will question it as they may feel intimidated or silly for not understanding so they just accept the answer.

This occurs when a person or people who are in a position of power supresses the other party’s argument because they do not agree. Instead of debating or giving the opposition a chance to defend their claim, the party in power may even go as far as to create laws to stop the information from being released. The image I selected is of a color therapy machine and was used in many doctors’ offices until 1951. It could be built and produced cheaply. The FBI raided and destroyed as many as they could because it was believed to be a threat to the American Medical Association and the Rockefellers who were one of the biggest financial supporters to the association.

This happens when someone uses pre-conceived ideas they may have to help determine the outcome. The person only looks for facts that will support their idea and ignore anything against it. Many cults rely on this. They want members who will believe them no matter what supporting evidence may be out there proving them wrong.

When you have an emotional connection to someone or something there is a bond created. I believe you can become attached to people and objects. It depends on situations in your life, that you look back upon and remember how that person or object helped you through a rough time or was there in a happy time. Once the person or object is gone, many people have a hard time letting go and may look for connections elsewhere.

Our brains look for patterns in things. Many of the patterns we find tend to relate to what we believe. Religious people tend to see Jesus or the Virgin Mary in objects, while someone who is overly sexual may see phallic symbols. A lot of these people once they see the object and show someone, then they see it too. This is how it spreads.
