Pauli Murray was born in Baltimore, Maryland on November 20th, 1910. They go by they/them pronouns. Murray was one of many children but they were all split up shortly after their mom died. Their father was emotional unavailable after his wife's death and was no longer able to care for them.

Murray graduated from Hillside High School in 1926.

They went to Hunter College and graduated with a degree in English literature.

Soon after they graduated from Howard Law school in 1944.

One year later they achieved a masters from Berkeley.

But they didn't stop there, they went on to get a J.S.D from Yale in 1965.

From 1931-1978 Murray wrote 13 articles, mainly about civil and women's right.

From 1955-2018 they had 5 books published.

From their article "An Alternative Weapon" Murray wrote:

"It is a strange thing to believe that out of the Negro's struggle and suffering may come the answer to the

very problem which troubles so many Americans today, pacifist and non- pacifist. It is strange and incredible to some."

Murray was one of the founders of the NOW organization. Which is the "National Organization for Women". Murray and other people fought for women's rights by having protests, sit ins, summits, and campaigns to disrupt and correct societies views on women.

One of NOW's accomplishments was the strike below.

"1970 NOW organizes “Women’s Strike for Equality” on the 50th Anniversary of the 19th Amendment, with actions in more than 90 cities and towns in 40 states. 50,000 women march on Fifth Avenue in New York."

Murray had many obstacles from the beginning of their life starting with the death of their mother. When that happened their father developed typhoid fever and died as well. The children were split and Murray went to live with their aunt.

Throughout their career they were deemed as "too radical" or were discriminated against for their gender choices or blackness.

Pauli once discussed these issues with her aunt and told her, "And because the laws of society do not protect me, I'm exposed to any enemy or person who may or may not want to hurt me".

Although the book "When everything changed" focuses on many women as a whole, Pauli Murray played a big role in the evolution of women rights. They had many careers as a lawyer, priest, teacher, and writer that helped many women realize their worth. They helped people come to the fact that the greater good came at the cost of themselves.
