"Managing Behavior"

"It's tempting to ignore it when students are meeting your expectations, but that will quickly erode in their trust in your standards."

This quote stood out to me because I know many of us struggle with "Do I fight this battle or ignore this battle?" and I thought this was a great point. If I continue to ignore misbehavior, that won't change the behavior---in fact, it may escalate it even further.

"If students expect you to respond in an unsurprising way, it will feel like business as usual."

I need to work harder at not having a certain tone or posture and put into my muscle memory specifically how to respond to all misbehavior in the same way.

In this article they talked about how ignoring any behavior/rule that you have set in place is never a good idea. You must always react to the behavior, even if that means a confrontation. The more we ignore a behavior, the more students will think they can get away with other things. It is also confusing to students if we suddenly want to react to something they have been doing for days/weeks/months.

The classroom must have the following 3 components in order to get the best effort from your students.
1. Building Class Culture
- This does not mean becoming best friends with your students. This means holding your students to high standards, but also letting them know you care about their learning.
2. Challenging All Students
- Students who are not challenged will check out during your lessons.
3. Enlisting Parents
- Parent phone calls are vital.

I saw this title on Polesel's reaction & was interested & wanted to read it for myself.

Students will not follow expectations because of 1)the expectations are unclear 2) they forgot the expectation 3) testing boundaries

The video suggests that a teacher should never ignore the misbehavior because it will give the picture that the expectation is not really important.

We often feel like we shouldn't react because it is an interruption and can cause confrontation.

Teachers need to be consistent to reacting to the misbehavior so that a student isn't taken by surprise or feel picked on. This takes commitment & energy from day 1.

The way that you respond is important-neutral expression, eye contact, and facing student-not yelling, but decisive. words are concise.

Develop automatic responses-commit to muscle memory. this will help to keep the flow of the lesson. Create a flash card to help develop the response.

If there is a misunderstanding-you should address it in order to stay consistent.

I really liked this video. I definitely think that I need to be more clear & consistent with my expectations. I think sometimes I forget or Im "tired" & I let things go. I need the muscle memory!!
