In 1618, he joined the Dutch State Army under command of Maurice of Nassau. According to Simon Stevin, there he studied military engineering, making others encourage him to get into the studies of mathematics. Then he met Isaac Beeckman, the principal of a Dordecht school, with whom he worked on catenary, conic section, free fall, and fluid statics. They both thought that a method that integrated physics and mathematics was necessary.

As stated by Adrien Baillet, on 11/10/1619, Descartes was stationed in Neuburg an der Donau. There, to keep warm, he shut himself in a room that had a mansory heater inside it. In this room he experienced three visions, and thought that a divine spirit had given him the idea of analytical, or Cartesian, geometry and revealed to him a mathematical method of philosophy. He believed that science would give him great wisdom if it was his main study in life. He saw that all truths are in some way connected. He soon discovered the truth cogito ergo sum, or, "I think, therefore I am".

Rene Descartes popularized
The phrase: Cogito ergo sum-
I think therefore I am. How wise!
If I’m thinking, then it’s presumed
That I exist because of “I”
The one doing the thinking.
On this point we see eye to eye;
Even so, it begs questioning
Beyond my very existence;
That is, the question: who am I?
A query asked with persistence.
What does “buried beneath” imply?
Does it mean “core sense” of myself
Or an illusion of one’s self?
