My group (group 50) did the concept of longevity in music. How does music last so long? What makes a song a classic and last a lifetime? We came up with several different concepts that make a song have longevity and last forever. Nostalgia, genre bending, emotionality, catchiness, and universality are the five concepts we chose that correlate with longevity in music.

Music of the Centuries

Music of the Centuries

We have all heard that one song. That one song that somehow catches the attention of all age groups and brings everyone together for at least a minute or two. That one song that can be played at a concert with 10 million fans, quietly at a coffee shop, or even on a busy street in New York, and, somehow, has the ability to take one’s breath away and make them lose all of their composure. Interestingly enough, that “one” song may not mean anything to one person, but can mean the world to another.

It is hard to explain the aspects of musical composition that makes certain music a “classic.” Is it the catchy beat of the drum? Is it the appeal to emotional aspects? Or is it just a matter of catchiness and opinion? Longevity is an all allusive element of music that can be subjective, but it is tangible. Longevity is the ability to last a lifetime. Whether it impacts a large population or just one individual, the prevalent and imperative abilities of this element include the abilities to portray nostalgia, emotional aspects, genre bending, universality, and catchiness.
