What was the San Francisco Renaissance?

Rather than a group, a movement or an era, this renaissance was a collage. After WWII, artists and writers felt the need to bring back the ideas of modernism, be the basis of counterculture and take poetry to the mainstream eye. This originated several groups of bohemian artists that all held different ideals and politics, but they were against the joylessness and rigidness of modern society.

This movement had jazz vibes written all over it. Because it walked hand in hand with jazz. Zen... zen... jazzy music, beatitude.

Break the mold, don't be an alienated mind in this square world, what do you have in mind?
That's a way to describe the Beat Generation, because they seeked liberation from the norms of society. They had influence from disciplines that involved meditation, a new state of mind and a sprinkle of obscenity. Think of the hippies but jazzy. Authors liberally referenced sex, expressed discomfort about social norms, all that contributed to future liberation movements.

Liberation, what else?
This gray, square world we live in
Dulled by war, inhibiting the bohemian mind
Censored, meaningless
Where is the art?
Renaissance

Some poets from the Beat Generation wrote about sex, drugs, liberation and criticizing society. In fact, Allen Ginsberg's Howl was deemed "obscene" enough to take matters to a trial but luckily the case was dismissed. A win for social freedom, a win for self-expression.

As Robin Blaser wrote in "A Bird in the House", truth flies.
Isn't truth a bird, then? There's no use in looking for an objective meaning to the poem, no, why is that? When truth, like poetry, is just meant to be known of, to be felt. People panicked with Ginsberg's "Howl", isn't it true to say poetry and truth are loud, then?

Why conform to the norm, when you can be counterculture and seek truth, not for others, for you? Don't miss your beat.

First thought, best thought.

One can see the similarities between the Beat movement and jazz music. There's a lot of improvisation involved, since Beat authors opted for a spontaneous route to writing, just like jazz musicians worked their melodies on the go with no specific goal in mind. Jam out.

"But that's not how art works!" Someone told me before. Who told you that? Don't be afraid of thinking outside the box. The Beat is bold, go outside the norm!
