Greetings! My name is Mikhail Paolo Siapno. I am a 2nd year student of the BS Psychology program. This is actually my second college program, as previously I took up Culinary Arts outside of the city. The five contemporary Philippine pop cultures of mine, currently are: coffee / coffee shops, BINI, K-Pop, Local Streetwear and Mobile Legends. Most of what I have stated may not be Filipino in nature, but it is what's trending in the country, in my experience and in my observation. With these five, I also think that the Philippines has turned these Westernized trends and gave it its own unique twist.

Choosing Coffee / Coffee Shops

The Philippine Pop Culture I chose to feature is coffee / coffee shops. The reason as to why I chose this topic is because it has become an integral part of our society, and that it's famous for being everybody's 'third place', which is a place that's entirely separate from your home and your workplace. In Davao City alone, there is a location unofficially called, "The Coffee Capital of the City", because of the multiple options of coffee shops available within that location. And when talking about it on a national scale, there is an annual event called The Philippine Coffee Expo, where people who are in the business of coffee, doesn't matter if it's in terms of ingredients, equipment or actual baristas, this event is where all coffee lovers come.

Application of Theory

My discussion will be framed with the Uses and Gratifications Theory. Firstly, coffee / coffee shops fulfill the two needs or wants, depending on how you see it, that humans have; a place to where they can hangout, and a place where they can satisfy their cravings. As this theory states, people will use media for their own benefit and their own gratification, and it is independent from the control of mass media. Next, it promotes social interaction and if you're lucky, there might be entertainment involved, as coffee shops are a gathering place, you will meet a lot of people, if you're brave enough, become friends with other customers and with the baristas. When I say that you might be lucky if there is entertainment involved, coffee shops in the city sometimes have events where live performances are involved, whether it's music, poetry or art. If you want to really dive deep into the world of coffee, coffee shops will also educate you in the drink. Pour overs, a type of coffee that is brewed manually rather than with a machine, are types of coffee that go beyond espressos and lattes. It's a drink that let's you explore flavors that you wouldn't expect to taste in plain coffee, you would get to learn about the coffee variety, it's country of origin, and so much more. Education is also a part of the uses and gratifications theory.

Coffee shops also are places that offer escapism, as media takes your mind off the hustle and bustle of reality, coffee shops also do the same, as long as that's your intent when visiting the coffee shops. And lastly, a sense of belongingness, baristas are known to be really kind and welcoming. You might say that it's just a part of their job, but you know genuine kindness when you see and feel it. With their welcoming attitude, it gives a feeling that you belong there, especially that they encourage you to be sociable with them. In conclusion, the coffee trend in the Philippines will continue to gain traction because of all it's benefits, and unlike the milktea trend that was its predecessor, the coffee trend is just going to keep on rising up. The only problem now is if my wallet can still afford to go to coffee shops.
