This video was incredibly impactful to me for the way I see the importance of the work we do for students with April Dunn plans. The alternative pathway provides more equitable options for students with disabilities to have competitive qualifications for work and effort they of which they are fully capable. April Dunn's case shows how systemically this is needed to acknowledge the valuable skills of all.

Students with disabilities deserve to earn a high school diploma. Because of her hard work and dedication, all can literally mean all. The alternative pathway can allow students with disabilities an opportunity to earn a high school diploma and go to college and beyond. It is a path that allows them to be successful.

The impact of obtaining a high school diploma despite all obstacles is twofold. Being able to attend college as well as confirming one's education on a resume is useful in a practical way, to get jobs and support oneself. It is also validation, that one is not someone lesser, or a person with limited use, but a citizen on everyone's level with the same rights and status.

I think that the opportunity for a disabled student to gain their high school diploma via an alternative pathway is necessary and appropriate. Hearing Ms. Dunn speak was powerful, and I loved hearing her advocate for herself. Sometimes, if a person speaks differently than others, they may be incorrectly branded as unintelligent, lazy, or lacking in some area. Ms. Dunn is an inspirational example of how people with disabilities have the same goals, dreams, and aspirations as their general ed counterparts. The opportunities gained through earning a high school diploma are really only the beginning, for both disabled and able-bodied young adults.

Students with disabilities deserve the opportunity to earn a high school diploma through alternative pathways. Not all students will pass standardized tests. This doesn't mean they are not capable of demonstrating the skills needed to graduate from high school. As Ms. Dunn stated, not receiving her high school diploma made it difficult to secure meaningful work opportunities. This had a negative impact on life.

The video and biography affirmed how big an impact individuals can make to better our world. April Dunn gave a powerful speech advocating for people with disabilities to have the same opportunity to earn a high school diploma because it opens so many opportunities. Having a high school diploma is essential for so many jobs AND for admission into college. Therefore, this pathway opens doorways that would otherwise be closed, even though standardized testing is only one of so many ways to demonstrate mastery of content and skills.
