His sermons were very dramatic, and listeners were known to shriek, moan, and faint when they heard them. He also used the “anxious bench” where he would seat the people that he thought were the most likely to convert. While they were in the “anxious bench” he would make direct eye contact with them and stare at them while he preached.

The new ideals preached during this time rejected the belief that God predetermined where we would go in the afterlife (and the fact that there was nothing for us to do to change our fate). Instead it stated that we are all individually responsible for our own salvation and we need to improve ourselves and society if we want to make it to heaven.

These were large gatherings that would draw audiences of more than 20,000 people who wanted to hear messages, study the Bible, pray, and “awaken their religious faith”. This was where thousands of people would convert and become believers. Minorities at the time such as women and African Americans, were also able to participate in these events.
