A protocol is a standard method. For example, it is standard protocol to shake somebody's hand when you eet them. Communication protocols are standard methods for communicating electronically. There are too may protocols to describe in any detail but these are a few of the most common protocols:

Transmission control protocol/internet protocol (TCP/IP) - this defines how signals are sent across the internet and enable internet users to communicate with each other.

Simple mail transfer protocol (SMTP) - this governs the sending of emails so that a edvice will be able to successfully send an email to another device.

Point-to-point protocol (PPP) - this sets standards for how two computers that are connected directly to each other should communicate. It is most often used in ADSL connected where a computer needs to connect to an ISP

Physical devices in a network need a method of communicating together. They can't all use their own language as they wouldn't be able to understand each other. Therefore they use a third language known as a protocol. If you purchase a wireless access point from one manufacturer then you would expect it to work with a wireless network interface card from a different manufacturer. This is because a standard is used, such as 802.11g.
Standards also ensure that products meet a minimum specification and set of criteria. Knowing that a product meets that standard gives the consumer confidence in the product. Having universal standards that are not specific to one manufacturer gives consumers the opportunity to purchase from different suppliers and this increases competition within the market.
De jure standards are set by an organisation such as the British Standards Institute (BSI), International Standards Organisation (ISO) or the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). These are formal and deliberately created. De facto standards are developed naturally because common practice has become established. Microsoft have developed many de facto standards die to their market place dominance. One of these is the use of Windows Live ID as an emerging de facto standard for user authentication on the Web.
