"I rushed from my hiding-place and with extreme labour, from the force of the current, saved her and dragged her to shore. She was senseless, and I endeavoured by every means in my power to restore animation, when I was suddenly interrupted by the approach of a rustic, who was probably the person from whom she had playfully fled. On seeing me, he darted towards me, and tearing the girl from my arms" (Shelley 120)

Quasimodo is a hunchback, and is quite monstrous in his appearance. He is rejected by the higher rankings because of his appearance thus follows a early life of crime before falling for Esmeralda. I think is rejection isn't justified or fair because he is truly a kind man, but has been cursed with a monstrous appearance which strikes fear in others. He is expected to be act with cruelty, even though he kind at heart to those he loves.
