John D. Rockefeller was born on July 8, 1839 into a large family in Richford, New York. He was the second of six children and the eldest boy. His father, William Avery Rockefeller, was an American con man while his mother, Eliza Davidson, was the daughter of farmers. Rockefeller's family moved several during his childhood until they eventually settled in Cleveland, Ohio. Rockefeller would go on to be a founder, the president, and largest shareholder of the Standard Oil Company. This led him to great wealth as the company gained a powerful monopoly. Rockefeller retired from the day-to-day businesses of the company in the 1890s and turned his attention to charities and benevolence eventually devoting himself to philanthropy in 1897. Today he is still regarded as one of the world's richest men to have ever lived.
