An attempt to trick someone into giving information over the internet or by email that would allow someone else to take money from them, for example by taking money out of their bank account.

- Urgent call to action or threats
- First time or infrequent senders
- Spelling and bad grammar
- Generic greetings
- Mismatched email domains
- Suspicious links or unexpected attachments

- Never click any links or attachments in suspicious emails
- If the suspicious message appears to come from a person you know, contact that person via some other means such as text message or phone call to confirm it.
- Report the message.
- Delete it.

- Buy anti-virus and anti-spy software from a trusted source, research before purchasing.

- If you have received many unsolicited phone calls and emails, consider changing your phone number and Email address.

- Hacking is when a criminal gains access to your personal information using technology to break into your computer, devices, or network.

- You are unable to log into your devices and or online accounts.

- You notice a new icon on your screen, or your computer is slower.

- Files have been either moved or deleted.

- Pop-up boxes start to appear, either offering to ‘fix’ or just say ‘close’.

- You have unexpectedly large phone data or internet bill.

- Money started to disappear from your bank without reason.

- Your phone is showing ‘SOS only’ where the reception bars used to be.

- Update your anti-virus and anti-malware, only purchase from a reliable source.

- Use your security software to run a virus check if you suspect something.

- Call the anti-virus software provider, or a computer specialist if you still have concerns.

- Secure your network, avoid using public Wi-Fi to access or provide personal info.

- Choose a PIN and passwords that would be difficult to guess, do not save them on your phone or computer.

- Beware of free download and access websites. They may install harmful programs without you knowing.

- Do not use software that auto complete online forms.
