Context: Holden thinks this when he is back at his hotel, feeling lousy and depressed. He is just about to get propositioned for a prostitute.

Analysis: I find this quote interesting because it makes me wonder, does this mess really happen "all of a sudden"? It seems like Holden has been on downward spiral for most of this book. Allie's death, getting kicked out of four schools, feeling lonely and depressed, all of this had led him to this point where he makes a really bad decision.

Quote: “It was against my principles and all, but I was feeling so depressed I didn’t even think”(119).

Context: Holden is in the elevator with Maurice and is thinking about how he would never do something like this, but he was so lonely, so he needed to.

Analysis: Even though Holden has so many people around him, he is still lonely. We know that Holden has strong principles and he always sticks to his instincts, but something about him not being able to go back to his family, or call anyone has him feeling depressed. Holden loses his moral compass and this will send into a downward spiral.

I think that this quite shows loneliness because he wants to jump also he doesn’t want anyone to see what happened. I think this is caused by missing Allie, Jane, and getting kicked out of 4 schools. Again, like the ducks in Central Park, it’s a manifestation of his thoughts about growing up and becoming an adult. He does superficial adult things such as drinking and smoking, but he hasn’t quite developed who he is yet. Also, it was an extremely traumatic event when Allie died, he didn’t like what changed after that (losing his brother). This is why he’s afraid of change and all the bad (but possibly good) things that can come of it.
