I did a personal journal with students during virtual learning where each day posed a different question and it opened up conversations with students and allowed them an outlet to express how they were feeling. I will be doing this again in the fall as it was extremely beneficial. My school also uses RULER and I was unsure and still am unsure in helping students accurately describe their emotions because the Mood Meter isn't user friendly for all ages.

I want all my students to have a positive experience as part of my classroom community. I understand that my classroom is only one part of their school experience.

After working through the School Climate presentation, I actually feel that I already integrate SEL into my instruction in many ways. I spend the first 2 weeks of school focusing on building relationships. I focus on team building, individual relationships with each student, as well as relationships with families and other adults in my room. I use stations, centers, and playlists a lot in my instruction where students are able to work either collaboratively together in small groups or independently at their own pace. I also make sure that there are established locations in my room for "cool down", "take a break", and/or "reflection" times as needed. I never let a student leave my room for their next class if I see that something is upsetting or bothering them.

I could definitely do a better job in establishing shared agreements, both for class expectations overall and for stations and centers work. I also feel that pausing and waiting for all students to be quiet before I speak is something that I can be more aware of. I have had some difficult behaviors in my 12:1:1 classes, and at times I have practiced the "ignoring the behavior" strategy. Although in the moment anything I did felt worthless, I need to be much more conscious of my actions and the effects that they could have in these situations.

I prefer to have students answer a few questions on their own first and then use their responses to do a verbal check in with them individually a few days later to reflect on their answers or to ask any further questions either one of us have. It is so important to know what each students interests, hobbies, learning styles, strengths and weaknesses are to be able to create a learning environment where they can feel safe and trusted. It is also equally important to know who they live with and who supports them at home to be able to establish the same type of open door relationship with each child’s family.

Learner profiles help teachers build trusting and authentic relationships in a few ways. First, they allow students to choose information to be shared with their teachers, providing likes/dislikes that the teacher can incorporate into his/her classroom. Next, these learner profiles also give students the opportunity to reflect on their own learning styles, what works best for them inside the classroom. Giving students the chance to share how they best learn gives students the chance to really “own” their learning. These learner profiles give teachers a great snapshot of the students as a whole, where it might take weeks into the school year to learn the information on their own. The teachers can then take these profiles and apply them to their teaching techniques, adapting lessons/activities/assignments to fit the needs of all learners.

One area that I am confident in is in the area of building authentic and trusting relationships with my students. I try to start off every class with an “ice breaker” type of question, to continue to learn about my students throughout the whole year. We also take the time to share stories and interests with each other as well. I like to have my students reflect on their learning, as well as provide feedback on my lessons, too. In addition, I spend the first chunk of the school year focusing on growth mindset and setting personal goals.

I could get better with checking in more 1:1 with students as individuals, instead of focusing more on how things are affecting the group of students. I think this is going to be essential for the upcoming school year, where students may be coming to us with more trauma than we’ve experienced in the past.

My room should be a place that students can come to throughout the day to check in if need be, or reach out to me in times of crisis. Starting with establishing strong classroom rules and procedures, and building authentic and trusting relationships, students will hopefully bring what they have learned inside my room with them as they travel throughout their day. In addition, I can share ideas with my team of teachers and counterparts to hopefully build consistency throughout the team/grade level to help not only the students I see directly, but hopefully spread to a more school wide environment.

Students come to school with different strengths and challenges along with different interests, talents and aspirations. Creating Learner Profiles can help us know, understand and from relationships at a faster rate then learning about then throughout the year. What are their strengths and challenges in how they learn? What are their talents, interests, passions and aspirations? Understanding our learners can not only help a teacher to better plan for instruction and materials, but it can also give learners a way to develop confidence and know themselves as a learner as they become more and more aware of how they learn best.

I am confident in integrating SEL into my instruction because I sense that coming out of COVID that it is going to be more crucial than ever to give students the space to share their feelings if we want to get anything done academically. It is more needed now than ever. I have even started speaking to a colleague as to how we can incorporate it into our advisory meetings as well as checkins at the begging of classes.

I love the idea of students creating learner profiles. They are fun and unique ways to get to know students. Both teachers and peers can easily learn about each other. Teachers can learn about what interests them, favorite things, etc. I loved how Rachel included how she learns best - what an excellent information for a classroom teacher to have. Peers can find classmates with similar interests, perhaps creating friendships or sparking conversation between students who other wards may not have been friends. I also think it allows students to show their creative side. I love the idea of giving students a choice, whether it be a google slide, PowerPoint, letter, or even allowing students to make a collage.

The area that I am most confident in is the types of SEL lessons to incorporate. I understand easy, quick ways to help facilitate ideas of mindfulness, growth mindset, and perseverance. These are ideas that I have frequent conversations with my students and often revisit during the school year. I also try to make my classroom as inviting and welcoming as possible, although physical space is an issue for me - I have a very small room.

The one area that I am unsure about is if I am doing my best to ensure that I get to really know the personal backgrounds of my students. As an AIS teacher, I feel I do so much to get to know my student's academic needs that I often do not pay close attention to getting to know them personally. When we begin our sessions, I ask my students how their day, the weekend was, what is going on in their life, but maybe there are ways to ensure that my conversation goes deeper throughout the school year. I find it sometimes harder as a specialist.
