The book "Groundhog Weather School" written by Joan Holub was creative and useful to read in the classroom in preparation for Groundhog Day. With this book, I was able to introduce weather topics to my students and it gave me a great idea to use with my students. On pages 17 and 18, the groundhogs are putting on a skit that each has their own saying for the seasons. I would love to break my students up into groups and allow them to come up with their own reports about the different seasons, wear fun costumes that represent those seasons, and present it in front of the class!

I found that the book was a great read for my students and would love to use it for an activity that would have my students reporting on specific animals or people. One page of the book was over "GeHOGraphy" in which the different groundhogs gave fun facts about groundhogs and the holiday itself. The following page showed how reports can be written over famous inventors and people. I think this would be a great example to use to have my students research topics of holidays, presidents, people in our community, animals, etc. This specific activity can be modified for 2-6 graders, even sixth graders love reading a picture book every now and then! I have attached a fact filled YouTube and kid friendly video about Groundhogs!

"Groundhog Weather School" is a fun, bright, informative, and well-written children's book that would be age appropriate for early childhood and Kindergarten through second grade students. The book is full of facts about Groundhog day and touches on the topics of weather, letter writing, reporting, geography, seasons, famous people, and science.
Using Groundhogs to Teach Social Studies?!?

After I read "Groundhog Weather School" I found that there were a bunch of different ways to incorporate social studies topics! For early childhood grades, it discusses the "Pledge of HOG-Allegiance" which would be a great way to compare with your students our Pledge of Allegiance and talk about the importance of it. The book also touches on the topic of "Famous Furry HOGnosticators" which can be used to teach all grades in elementary school the influence our community members and important reporters, government officials, and other humans have on our community and the country. Finally, one of the examples is of important weathermen, in which you can tie important historians into your lesson of your town or of the country.

Summary of "Groundhog Weather School"

"Groundhog Weather School" written by Joan Holub starts the story line with the prediction the groundhog makes on February 2nd. When the animals realize that there might need to be more than one groundhog calling the shots, an ad is sent out for all groundhogs to respond to and be enrolled in Groundhog Weather School. At weather school, they learn about the history and facts of groundhogs and the important groundhogs of the world. The groundhogs have to make weather predictions, know how to build a burrow, learn about the reasons for the seasons, and many more groundhog duties. This book is a cute, fun, fact filled book that would be great to read around the Groundhog holiday or to use when teaching lessons about any of the fascinating topics this book covers. Although the reading level for independent reading is second grade and up, this book would be well worth anyone's time to read to young children.
