Other items frequently traded in the Silk road was foodstuffs. An example of a widely traded foodstuff was apples and oranges. Apples spread through steppe belt and oranges spread from China to Mediterranean through maritime route

Example: Paper
Paper was invented in Han Dynasty China. Became primary choice of writing material. China tried to protect secret of it's manufacture. Under the mongols(13th & 14th century), China set up papermaking business in Samarkand. Paper business spread, and it was supplied to most of Western Eurasia.
Led to printing(6th century CE), a development supported by Buddhism. Duplication of sacred text was an act of religious merit.
