It is a remarkable example of early Muslim military construction in central and southern Asia. The primary defenses of this 70-hectare fortress are made up of enormous masonry walls that are more than four kilometers in circumference. They are lined with 68 bastions and have twelve colossal entrances punctuated in key locations. The fort had a significant impact on the evolution of architectural style in the Mughal Empire since it combined artistic and architectural traditions from other Islamic countries.

A huge ancestral Puebloan settlement is located here and built into the cliff sides. It was lived in from about 450ce to 1300ce. I learned about this in high school and immediately got attached to the architecture and agricultural system of the ancient Pueblos. I remember learning they built their farms at the top of the cliffs so the plants would get sun and the water would drain off the sides when it rained for natural irrigation. I think nowadays they put lanterns in the windows of the dwellings at night so that people can see what it would have looked like when people lived there. Pueblo people now do not live in the region. According to the UNESCO site it was the first archaeological site in the world to be protected as a national park before the national park service was created ! -Lila

There was a lot of cultural transformation that occurred in Chichen Itzá as a result of conquests, most significantly being the conquest of Yucatan in 1526. Acculturation can be noticed by the style blending in the architecture with the development of Maya and Toltec traditions. The gradual abandonment of this area makes it all the more important to remember-- Chicken Itzá is a remarkable symbol of indigenous power in pre-conquest Mexico.

Old Town Corfu is one of the most beautiful places I have ever been to. What specifically caught my eye was how different it looked from other places in Greece. The pastel buildings and narrow winding streets felt more Latin (Italian, Spanish) than Greek. The old fortresses are so big, beautiful, and very well preserved. The mix of Venetian, French, and British styles made the town feel very special. By Maya Ron

The Dolomites are a mountain range in the alps of Italy, with 18 different peaks. It spans over 141,903 ha and at its tallest rises to over 3,000 meters. The mountains are full of steep cliffs and towers, creating a beautiful landscape. The mountains are classed as a UNESCO site due to their natural beauty, and also because of various geological features they have (unique concentrations of concentrated limestone and other rare elements).
