1) Post rules for ADHD in the classroom. With input from students, establish short, simple classroom rules. State them in positive terms that convey what you want students to do.

2) Making classroom routines. will help students with ADHD stay on task.

3) Give appropriate supervision for ADHD students. Children with ADHD require more supervision than their peers because of their delayed maturity, forgetfulness, distractibility, and disorganization. Help these students by pairing them with classmates who can remind them of homework and classwork, using student partners to team up on a project, and involving classroom aides as much as you can during and after class.

4) Offer Accommodations for ADHD in the Classroom such as extended time on tests, shortened assignments, instruction in note-taking, a notetaker, and segmented assignments for long-term projects (with separate due dates and grades).

5) Reduce potential distractions by always seating the students who have problems with focus near the source of instruction and/or stand near student when giving instructions in order to help the student by reducing barriers and distractions between him and the lesson.

6) Allow the student to move around or fidget, preferably by creating reasons for the movement. Provide opportunities for physical action — do an errand, wash the blackboard, get a drink of water, go to the bathroom, etc. If this is not practical, then permit the student to play with small objects kept in their desks that can be manipulated quietly, such as a soft squeeze ball, if it isn’t too distracting.

7) Use frequent, positive feedback.

That's what I get asked a lot. I don't take it offensively, I believe people are genuinely concerned or curious. To be honest I'm exhausted. My little bear is always "on" so I have to be as well. Anticipating situations before they happen, such as going to bank or grocery store has it challenges. I know I need to have some activity planned or questions to keep the wheels turning the way I want them to. It's a blessing to have my Oli, but I owe a lot to coffee to be the best Mom I can be lol

When Oliver was a child I disregarded his energy as simple child behavior. I began to notice differences between my child's behavior and those around us. It began when we attended mommy and me classes and Oli couldn't sit in the circle as long as the other children. He needed to walk around during play time and his interactions with other children were aggressive or overly excited. This behavior continued on and that's when I realized Oliver had more energy than his peers and how it affected him in social settings. Yet, according to his pediatrician he has met all milestones on time and academically he continues to meet the standards. So yes my child is different but he is healthy and continues to grow academically and socially.

It goes without saying that once I noticed the energy spikes that never ended I decided to seek the advice of my pediatrician. She was very helpful in referring me to a neuropsychologist. The evaluation there was used to discover Oliver’s strengths and weaknesses as a learner. We didn't qualify for the Regional Center services but we were advised that through the school psychologists evaluation we could qualify for accommodations within the classroom.

When Oliver first began exhibiting unwanted behavior due to his disability, I began to have him attend early intervention programs. Yet, these programs weren't cheap because we didn't qualify as low income. Also, they were located in affluent areas that we do not live by. So the combined gas and costs of attending did add up. It didn't help that I bought most of the educational toys present at the programs so as to model appropriate behavior with them at home. Unless you're considered low income I've found resources for ADHD too limited and costly. Which is frustrating considering so many people are diagnosed with the disability.

Living with Oliver and our ADHD can be like living in a zoo! He can be loud, busy, and have endless energy. Still, once I learned that he has ADHD I stopped punishing him for doing things he couldn't help. Home is the only safe place we have in the world and we need our families love and understanding so we can grow up strong and emotionally healthy. I strive to provide that platform for my son and please remember that when you're at your wits end with your loved one who lives with this disorder.
