There are different kinds of earthquakes. There is tectonic plates that move together and kinda shake the earth. If there is a big tectonic earthquake it can shake the earth from 1,000 miles away from were it is happening.    
 What to do when a earthquake is happening.
1. Hide under a safe place/table. put your hands over you head and get on the floor and curl up into a ball.
2.do not stand in the doorway.
3. when the earthquake is done. you get out of the place you were and look for falling objects and anything in front of you so you do not trip.
