Prompt: To what extent does Shakespeare rely on the motif of fate to deliver one of his main messages, and why is this important?

Introductory Paragraph

In popular cinema, the idea of tempting fate or even escaping fate is a prevalent notion. Movies like Final Destination and Slumdog Millionaire are two relatively well-known examples; plays often explore these same concepts, too. Throughout William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, the motif of fate is established to help deliver one of the central ideas that no matter how hard people try, if they tempt fate or try to defy their destiny, they will likely lose. This idea is significant because even though people like to think they are in control, sometimes there are greater forces at play.

Prompt: To what extent does Shakespeare rely on his use of antithesis to deliver one of his main messages, and why is this important?

Introductory Paragraph

There is an old saying that opposites attract--that for every yin there is a yang. Yet, there also exists the popular notion that extreme feelings often lead to extreme endings. Throughout Romeo and Juliet, William Shakespeare’s repeated use of antithesis helps foreshadow the idea that things will not work out well for the two young lovers, Romeo and Juliet. This idea is significant because it teaches the audience that loving in moderation is often safer than being swept away by passion.

After thinking over Tybalt arising from the grave, Romeo being unsure of Juliet's status on wedding with Paris, she decides to drink the vial, but for one reason only, Romeo. She drinks the potion for Romeo because just like how Romeo is willing to sacrifice his live to be with his love, she is now exchanging that back to him.

In addition, she thinks back to Tybalt's spirit. How she is worried if she were to drink the vial his spirit would rise from the grave and hunt Romeo down, leaving Juliet defenseless. Finally, if she did follow through with the plan, Romeo would have a more difficult time comprehending her "death" because he is the one being transferred information back and forth and something may ultimately go wrong.

In a sense, I do think Romeo expresses both love and infatuation towards Juliet in this quote. He reflects positively on what he's witnessed in front of his very eyes, but starts to feel a sense of guilt. He worries maybe Juliet is right, they may be moving too fast with their relationship, maybe it isn't love or infatuation, but lust. It may just be fake love and Juliet is ready to jump to her next love. In regards to Tybalt, I believe in a way he thinks killing Tybalt was the wrong decision. If Romeo was killing him just for Juliet, then maybe all of that was for nothing if Juliet were to leave Romeo to face the consequences of being banished.
