Nature-Based Play with Matching Sticks

This activity allows students to use their critical thinking and problem-solving skills to understand the difference and comparison of the leaves. The teacher will have students in groups. Each group will have a handful of leaves on their table. The teacher will have her leaves of each kind on popsicle sticks. Whenever the teacher shows a particular leaf on a stick, the students will then pick that similar leaf at the table. Then the students can count and explain the shape, color, length, texture, and size. Once students have separated what they have at their table. Students can work together and record what they have observed (how many little leaves do your see? How many big leaves do you see? How many leaves do you have that are smooth, shiny, or dull? The routine used in this exercise is shape, colors, and lines. This routine encourages detailed observation of the different types of leaves.

The below link is another way to sort leaves.
https://www.youtube.com/shorts/kQShheJgHWg

They will place their animal on construction paper and make a background for their leaf animal. Students will use their imagination and creativity to create their works of art. Thinking with images is the routine that can be used in this activity. Students will be able to use the images and examples used in the fiction book "Leaf Man" to help them come up with an idea to create a leaf critter. What did leaf man run into as the wind blew him from place to place?

Cite Source:
Council for Environmental Education.
