This resonates with me. Earlier this year, my siblings and I took turns taking our mom to the audiologist, concerned about possible hearing loss. I would say that a sense of safety is something that can be lost when hearing is a challenge. If you are used to relying on your ears to recognize the sounds in an empty house, the lack of sounds becomes distressing. In addition to the safety concerns, I would miss music, the waves crashing at the beach, the rain falling, the laughter from my loved ones, etc. Too many things to think about!

Losing my hearing would be tragic. I would miss the sound of my loved ones speaking, music, rain, the ocean, birds singing, church bells ringing, leaves rustling, etc. Hearing loss runs in my family. I saw my ENT and audiologist this year and was told I had the hearing of an 18 year old. Thank God!

I believe that not being able to hear at this point in time would be devastating. Hearing is something I depend a great deal on especially as a former singer and Cello player my hearing was an imperative in guiding me to stay in tune. I would miss the simplicities in life that many of us take for granted. I think it’s different to be born deaf than to be able to hear and then lose it. Hearing would also impact me in that I wouldn’t be able to speak nor hear the 4 languages I speak.

I love to hear the birds and rustle of the leaves on a warm spring day. I think a hearing loss would be devastating and very difficult to adapt to at this age. I listen out for things like my son when I can't see him. I would feel like I didn't know what was going on. I can hear if he's hurt, happy, upset. Or I know if I don't hear anything, that he's probably up to no good, lol. I also love to hear him singing and the dialog he has with himself when he's playing with his toys. I would miss that.

I think being placed on the spot to speak In front of others would also be an issue. The comedian Steve Harvey has a stuttering problem. He gave really good tips to an audience member of the issues he faced and how others could benefit from his tips. He asked the person to talk to themselves internally before speaking aloud On the third try then the person could speak aloud. He claimed when you speak internally yoo do not stutter. It was very interesting.

It has allowed my technical skills to further advance in learning new platforms and methods that I can use for both school and work. It has also forced me to be more mindful of what I am writing, being that not everyone’s perception is the same as mine when reading an email. The negative impact it’s had on my communication skills is that due to the pandemic, everyone relies on texting and emailing much more rather than picking up the phone to call. I feel the pandemic to some extent has made us lose that personal interaction that is nice to have very once in awhile.

I would strongly recommend having a child evaluated for early intervention if a doctor/teacher/caretaker recommends. Also, if you are noticing an issue and might not be sure. Many people are hesitant to have their child evaluated for fear of having them "labeled". If your child needs help, they should get it as early as possible. This will insure that they will get the help they need and may not need to continue with services by the time they enter kindergarten. I had my son evaluated for EI and he has flourished! He had speech services for less than a year and now has a vocabulary that amazes me at times! I am so thankful that we got him help at such an early age and now it is not hindering his education or social life!
