What is NAI's definition of "sustainability" - sounds like we will have to make one!

People are looking to this group as leadership and as a source of info for peers.

Leave No Trace programs and "lifestyle" are important

Sustainability is part of: buildings, utility costs, creating events, recycling, ocean protection, climate change, water conservation, interpretive programming, impact on trails or natural areas

Sustainability needs to be tangible and part of daily activity, but also part of long term practice

Preservation vs. conservation

Reduce and reuse BEFORE recycling

How do our environmental decisions affect future generations?

Know the supply chain - "green" may not really mean "green"

Being green costs a lot of green (this was everyone's favorite quote!)

Taking little steps like recycling, turning off water when brushing teeth, etc. might be the most realistic ways of being sustainable for most people

People are a big part of sustainability - social equity, environmental justice, and healthy communities

Find a balance between environmental, economic, and social equity (Clark Hancock said this)

Try to not prohibit people from participating in sustainability. Example: have reusable straws or utensils as promo giveaways, because many people can't afford to buy these for themselves.

Most notes are on the facebook post from 11/15/20.

NNOCCI offers climate change trainings online.

Amanda suggested that she and Andrea do a presentation at a conference in the future about curbside vs. drop off recycling programs.

Bethann Kosiba from the Shedd Aquarium suggested that our Sustainability Section team up with ZWPA Section for future trainings/webinars/conferences since climate change and sustainability are big topics in that section too.

Travis Trinh wondered if this section might put the word out that industries that make products should be more responsible for waste management or recycling opportunities. It's something we can look into as a section, but ultimately this might be a higher level discussion from NAI as a whole, and possibly not something NAI wants to represent.

We need to focus on REDUCE and REUSE.... RECYCLE comes last!
