A dog would be a good addition to the team because they could serve for protection. In the text, it says,”Ten days later, on May 29, he was performing guard duty.” This shows that the dog would be a valuable addition to the team because he is able to guard the people on the expedition. The dog would also be able to hunt, and in the text it says,”Dreywer [Drouillard] wounded a deer which ran into the river. my dog pursued caught it drowned it and brought it to shore at our camp.” This shows that the dog is capable of hunting.

2nd person

York

York would be a valuable addition to the team because he was able to gather food and swim. Swimming was something many of the men were not able to do, so he was able to contribute to the journey in that way. In the text, it says,”On June 5, he swam to a “Sand bar to geather Greens for our Dinner,” revealing that he was involved in preparing the captains’ meals, and that he could swim, which several of the men could not do.” This shows that swimming was a rare ability among the men, and he could get food for everyone of necessary. 

Ginger

Ginger was a plant found on the Lewis and Clark expedition. Ginger is a good medicinal herb, and it is used in cooking and medicine. In the text, it says,” Wild ginger is occasionally sold as a medicinal plant even today…” The text also states,” It was once used by many different Indian tribes for a wide variety of physical–and even psychological–ailments.”This shows that it would have been a useful plant to have around.

Animal

Buffalo

Buffalo were an animal that were found in the expedition as well. Buffalo can provide meat, and you can hunt them for their fur as well. Fur will keep you warm, and that would be useful while traversing the Rocky Mountains. They have horns, which could be used for other things around the camp. Buffalo could be more useful than a lot of animals overall, and they would have been in a great abundance during the expedition.
