3. How did increased overseas trade lead to conflict with the Barbary states?

Increased overseas trade led to conflict with the Barbary state because the coast of North Africa started attacking passing vessels. To protect its ships, the U.S. paid a yearly tribute. In 1801, Tripoli increased its demands, but Jefferson refused to pay. Then, they declared war. Jefferson ordered the navy to blockade the port of Tripoli. After Tripoli attacked again, Jefferson sent marines to launch a surprise attack. In 1805, Tripoli signed a treaty promising not to interfere with American ships.

4. Why did Britain and France begin to seize American ships after 1803? Americans profited from the conflict. Both foreign countried were too busy to trade, the money increased and the U.S. used it to make new ships. Both foreign countries didn't want the U.S. to trade with its enemies, so Napoleon seized American ships for Britain and vice versa.

5. (A) What was the goal of the Embargo Act?

The goal of the Embargo Act was to hurt France and Britain by cutting off trade with the U.S.

(B) Why did it fail?

It failed because it hurt the U.S. more than it hurt Britain and France.
