Half of our population is dead. Our economy is the worst it has ever been because people refuse to leave their houses out of fear of catching the plague. I remember that it first came to New York City, then a week later it was everywhere. At first, the plague caused even more division through the country, but by the end of it America realized that, in order to survive, we had to stick together and only argue about the most important issues. Although the plague was an awful thing to live through and it has caused unimaginable amounts of grief, it has strengthened our country in a way that nothing else could have. Funnily enough were this plague to attack modern day North Korea, likely there would be more survivors since the there control is so complete. Socially both in the US and in North Korea fear levels would be heightened and because of our modern knowledge of bacteria we would live in fear of contact. Religious people in either location would likely cling tighter to their prayers and pray every chance they got. But the flaw of the US if this devastation were to come to pass would be our freedom. Every individual would act in whatever way we see fit, leaving the house, going to church, it would be almost impossible to prevent contact. There would be a huge demand for medical and survival materials, and very little money spent on luxuries. Many stores would be broken into and raided in the midst of the general public's fear and panic. People would most likely either stay holed up in their houses or move into secluded areas. The dead bodies would be too contaminated for anybody to want to deal with, so they would likely start to be burned, or pile up in the towns that already have died off. It would have a more pronounced impact on poorer neighborhoods, as their living accommodations would be more densely packed, and therefore more prone to spreading the disease. Also, at the start of the plague when there is still medical attention for those suffering, they would not be able to slow it down.
