In this episode of Bob's Burgers, Tina (pictured below in the blue shirt) is absolutely devastated to discover that her love interest, Jimmy Junior, will no longer be her Valentine and has instead asked another girl, Becky, who is now popular and "miss thang" in school because she got her braces taken off, to go to dinner with him instead. Tina is left motionless, speechless, and unable to be consoled by her family. The episode begins with Tina groaning for hours without being able to even explain the reason for her devastation. Her little sister Louise had to investigate through the grape-vines at school as to why her sister was so distraught. At the mere mention of the word "Valentine's," Tina would begin to hyperventilate.

The Impact of Peers

Jimmy Junior is a very "nerdy" type of character on the show however he is very popular amongst other friends in similar crowds. Tina is definitely what you would consider quirky. Becky has become popular and attractive due to her braces being removed but she does not have a great personality. Tina, on the other hand, still has braces and glasses too, yet is very funny. Jimmy Junior seems to try to be the "cool guy," and so it is apparent that as soon as Becky became popular, he decided to dump Tina for her. "Adolescents judge one another on the basis of the company they keep, and they become branded on the basis of whom they hang out with (Steinberg 150). Clearly, Becky's new status of popularity had much to due with Jimmy Junior's decision to ask her out on Valentine's Day, at the expense of Tina's feelings.

The Impact of Family

It was very clear from Tina's non-stop groaning that she was absolutely devasted, and here family jumped right in to first find out the problem, console her, adn come up with ways to distract her. Linda, her mom, suggested that they have a girl's night, which accounts for much of the episode. Linda and Bob had planned on renting a limo for their date, but instead chose to spend that night with Tina so that she would have a good time. "The adolescent's family must cope with the increasing importance of the peer group (Steinberg 110). Rather than minimize Tina's feelings or ignore the situation, her family was very understanding of the pain she was feeling, and did as much as possible to make her feel better. By understanding the situation from her perspective, they were able to help her overcome the social devastation.

The most apparent media impact that I noticed in this episode of Bob's Burgers is the significance that was placed on Valentine's Day altogether. The pressure of having a date on that night, the importance of having a Valentine, and the symbolism of the holiday was very much influenced by media.

Tina's role in Bob's Burgers highlights the perspective of an adolescent, including puberty, popularity, and peer pressure. Tina is known for writing fantasy love stories, having crushes on boys, and dealing with self image. This particular episode, V for Valentine-detta, featured the impact of peers on one another when it comes to the symbolism of holidays and the pressure it puts on adolescents. While the characters ask one another out on dates, they are driven by their parents, and so this episode also touches base on how parents must be understanding to the social lives of adolescents in order for them to be involved. I really liked how this episode portrayed the roles of parents and families in a positive way in relation to their adolescents' personal lives. Bob's Burgers, in general, portrays a great family dynamic.
