         <description><![CDATA[<div>Students at Zapata Academy participated with a study of Jacqueline Woodson. <br><br>Students in grades 1-3 read <em>Each Kindness</em> and <em>The Other Side</em> and focused on identifying the message of these texts as well as ways we can be changemakers. <br><br>Fourth and fifth graders read <em>This is the Rope</em>. I used <a href="https://www.teachingbooks.net/book_reading.cgi?id=10451&amp;a=1">TeachingBooks.net</a> for an introduction and excerpt read by Woodson. Then students used Britannica to research and learn more about the Great Migration.<br><br>Grades 6-8 read excerpts from <em>Brown Girl Dreaming</em>. Students used a poem group discussion guide from <a href="http://www.readwritethink.org/files/resources/PoemDiscussionGuide.pdf">Read Write Think</a>.&nbsp;<br><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>I read aloud African American themed books to k-2 during the month of February.<br>&nbsp;My 4th graders chose partners and shared a wide assortment of African-American themed books, both fiction and nonfiction. At the end of the period, we quickly shared out our most amazing new learning.<br>My 7th graders researched and read about the Children's March in Birmingham in 1963 which was very empowering. We culminated our study by watching "Might Times The Children's March" documentary.<br><br></div>]]></description>

The attached "quilt" is the result of their work.</strong></div><div>The National African American Read-In was established in 1990 by the Black Caucus of the National Council of Teachers of English. At Galileo, each classroom chose a book, short story, poem, speech, letter, etc., by an African American author. After reading and discussing the text, classes created a poster about the text. The posters were photographed and a digital quilt was created by Henry Van Zytveld.</div><div><br></div>]]></description>
