Yam (brown tuber) occupies a special place in the heart of the Igbo people. It is important for survival in lean years and so its arrival is an occasion of great joy. It is for the new harvest and the end of the rainy season that Igbo's celebrate Iwaji (cutting yam) every month of August.
The yam is famous as it can survive for up to six months without refrigeration.
It can just be peeled and boiled or pulped into a doughy consistency to produce pounded yam which is eaten with traditional Egusi(melon) soup, usually the main meal eaten at the new yam festival celebration.
Yam is often made into pottage, roasted or fried into chips to be eaten with egg sauce.
The New yam festival each year provides a colourful exhibition of the importance of the vegetables in igbo culture.
Yam recipe attached.

https://guardian.ng/life/iwa-ji-the-new-yam-festival-in-igbo-land/

Country focus: Myanmar
Myanmar which was formerly called Burma is a country in Southeast Asia. The country has suffered decades of repressive military rule, widespread of poverty, and civil war with other ethnic groups. They required a humanitarian support from other countries because they lost democracy and military took over on the 1st of February 2021
(https://refugeehealthguide.org.au/).
Some countries were granted refugee and humanitarian visas in 2020 - 2021 by Australia which Myanmar happened to be amongst the top four with over 1600 visas granted(https://refugeehealthguide.org.au/). The 3 common health concerns listed on the Australian refugee health practice guide that are likely to be present in the people arriving from Myanmar are low latent tuberculosis infection, low vitamin D and mental health issues (https://refugeehealthguide.org.au/).

Latent tuberculosis infection:
It is an infection that occurs when someone is infected with Mycobacterium tuberculosis, but does not have active tuberculosis.

One treatment available for refugees from Myanmar who's tested positive to latent tuberculosis infection is 6 to 9 months of Isoniazid (10 mg/kg up to 300 mg daily).

Low vitamin D:
Vitamin D deficiency causes issues with bones and muscles which can lead to rickets, osteoporosis, bone and joint pain e.t.c . It can be detected by blood test.

One treatment available for refugees from Myanmar low on vitamin D is daily dosing or high dose therapy paired with advice about sun protection and exposure.

Mental Health :
During migration, physical, psychosocial, exploitation and inhuman detention conditions often contribute to post traumatic stress disorder(PTSD), depression and anxiety.

One treatment available for refugees from Myanmar who's mental health is affected is post- arrival screening for emotional wellbeing and mental health disorders as well as ongoing review for refugees. Post-arrival health assessment offers an opportunity to build trust and rapport.

https://www.redcross.org.au/migration/asylum-seekers/

https://www.smartraveller.gov.au/destinations/asia/myanmar
https://www.dfat.gov.au/countries/myanmar/myanmar-development-cooperation-

factsheethttps://refugeehealthguide.org.au/

For me, the most important aspect of competency standard 12.1 is developing self awareness and the ability to work in a culturally appropriate way with the refugee and migrant people, restoring mental health and psychosocial needs of the affected population which is a major concern. I have improved my understanding about trauma and advocating care for vulnerable people from diverse backgrounds. Having learned about this makes me understand that nurses are obligated to provide high quality nursing care that is person centred, culturally responsive, understanding that we as individuals have different cultures and beliefs which makes us who we are. I feel that i am capable in delivering efficient care and service navigation. This skill is essential to me as a student nurse in other to develop a professional relationship with my future patients from culturally diverse backgrounds in a respective manner using strength base approach, effective communication in peoples preferred language as well as health promotion and education.
