I need everybody to post on what they observe during blood component visit in this page. Just share your experience about what you see and observe in your own words (no direct copying words from your friends ya). No need to be formal. Do put your name, matric number and a photo of you so that I can remember you! =)

We went to visit UMMC blood bank on 22/3. It was my 3rd time been there.
We went directly into the room that is used to store and process the blood after a brief explanation about the registration procedure.
There are refrigeratored centrifuges, freezers, refrigerators and many more machines that has its own role in blood processing.
This time, I am glad I had the chance to witness how the blood components being separated. The packed cell blood will be hung and compressed by the machine. The plasma and platelet will be separated into a new bag, and preservatives will be added to the original blood pack filled with red cells and white cells.
Besides, the blood that is needed by special patient such as Thalassemia patient, a special procedure need to be carried out. The white blood cell need to be separated before releasing the blood to the patient. A special filter is attached to the blood bag. The blood pack is hang to allow the blood pass through the filter before it reach another new blood pack. The blood in the new blood pack is now free from white blood cell.
The equipment in UMMC blood bank are advanced and well-maintained. We should appreciate the efforts made by government and also staffs from UMMC blood bank in order to give the correct blood to whoever needs the blood and save their lives.
Sheh Wen, MEB150015

During my visit to the blood transfusion lab, I learn a lot of things. Basically, the workflow of the lab is collection and labeling of donor blood through blood donation, processing and separation of the blood into different components, and finally, storage of blood in the freezer. During processing, whole donor blood is placed in a large centrifuge and is spun for a preset time at a preset speed. The red blood cells precipitate to the bottom of the bag, followed by platelets, white blood cells and the plasma at the very top.For the separation, the plasma and red blood cells are collected into different bags using a device called the separator. Red blood cells expire in 42 days. Fresh frozen plasma can last up to 1 year in the freezer. Platelets expire in 5 days at room temperature. There are 3 types of blood bags used in this lab. Single blood bag is used for whole blood collection. Double blood bag is used for separation of 2 different blood components (red blood cells and plasma) obtained through the process of centrifugation and extraction. Triple blood bag is used for separation of 3 different blood components (red blood cells, plasma and platelets). SAGM is an anticoagulant solution variant for red blood storage up to 42 days.

Doris Tang, MEB150008
