Wilson Fundations
Fundations is an early literacy program designed by Wilson that includes phonemic awareness, phonics/ word study, high frequency word study, reading fluency, vocabulary, comprehension strategies , handwriting and spelling. Progress monitoring is built into this program, which is what teachers in my district use as a formative assessment tool. Some assessments provided include: weekly spelling tests, weekly, phonetic awareness tests, and daily writing journals. Teachers use the information gathered from these assessments to adjust instruction and pinpoint areas of concern in each student's literacy development.

Renaissance STAR Test
The school year is split into trimesters. Each trimester students are required to take a summative early literacy star test on their computers. This test is multiple choice and reads each question aloud to the student. Each time a student takes a STAR Test, his or her results are compiled into a graph that displays progress throughout the year. Students in reading intervention will take the STAR test every other week in order to more closely monitor progress. Both the teachers and this district use this tool to provide evidence of continuous improvement in early literacy.

Homework Journals
Each day after school, students take home two homework journals. One Journal is for math practice, and the second is for language arts practice. The students must complete one page out of their journals each night in order to receive a completion stamp from their teacher the following day. These journals are used to evaluate and adjust current instruction based on how students perform.
Daily 5 Work
Daily 5 refers to a set of 5 tasks students are to complete during the classroom literacy block. The tasks include: read to self, read to a friend, listen to reading, word work, and work on writing. As students complete each task they move on to the next at their own pace. The word work and work on writing students complete is turned in to be evaluated and graded by the teacher.
Reading Groups
During Daily 5 the teacher may call reading groups. Each reading group is arranged by reading level and comprehension skills. The classroom teacher uses this time to observe and evaluate each group's literacy skills.
