Mapping - Mapping out where the discussion flows from student to student 

Hand signal after a minute of thinking - students signal with a thumbs up when they understand it, to reduce the same student answering every single question 

Double Circle - each student gets to talk to each other, shifting in an inner and outer circle, talking to everyone 

Contract of open discussion “Do’s” and “Don’t’s” - Writing down what is okay in open discussion and how we treat others when they contribute to the conversation, even if it is an unpopular opinion

Don’t engage in power dominance because students will meet you there and challenge you

Don’t bribe them or try to give them a lecture about why it's important to follow rules 

Do give them limited choices, ex. “Sit at the back table and work quietly, or I am calling the office.”

I am curious: Ask students "What are you (still) curious about?" Can be used to gauge comprehension of the lesson.

Human Bar Graph: Physical representation of understanding. (Students can physically move to which group they belong in based on how they feel they comprehended the lesson OR students can write a post it note and put it in their category on the board/wall).

Appreciation, Apology, AHA!: Students share one appreciation, apology for another, or an AHA! moment in class about the material or it can be personal.

My next step: Students set an action oriented plan, make To-do list, and proactively plan a goal or set of needs for an assignment or for personal reasons.
