It shows the struggles of growing up, and what you have to go through, and I can relate to the text in many ways. Boy's Life can help me prepare for the HL Essay and Paper 1, because in the text, the author uses lots of literary devices to create a story, without over doing it. I tend to over do literary devices, and this can help me learn how not to do so.

How does the meaning and impact of a text change over time?

There are three main factors that can change the meaning and impact of a text over time: point of view, character development, and shift.
In terms of point of view from the readers perspective, an child may not understand the meaning of the text the same way as an adult or teenager; nor will they be impacted the same. This goes for adults and teenagers as well. But specifically in terms of within novels, character development can change the meaning and impact of a text through out the novel. For example, In, Rebecca, she changes social classes and has gains a completely different life. This tells a lesson, changing the meaning/impact of the novel. This ties into the last factor, of shifts in text. This includes shift in setting, tone, theme, point of view, attitude and more. There is a meaning and lesson behind every shift. These shifts contribute to an overall shift in the meaning of the text, which can impact the reader in different ways.

How do literary texts reflect, represent or form a part of cultural practices?

Literary texts can represent a part of cultural practices many ways universally. For example, many cultures are driven by certain religion. Each religion has some sort of text entailing the purpose of the religion, and everything you need to know about. For example, Christians and Catholics follow their own bible, whereas followers of Judaism follow their Torah; a different form a text, but still a text nonetheless.

How does Rebecca connect to other works you've read? & How does Rebecca connect to our world today?

Rebecca connects to other works we have read in terms of the theme. One of the themes expressed in Rebecca, is the coming of age. That theme is also seen in Boy's Life and Persepolis. The novel Rebecca serves as a global representation of people's struggle through out social classes. Just like Rebecca, many by luck are granted great things, which can change a person for the worst. For example, many people after winning the lottery become addicted to drugs, waste all of their money, and end up worse than before. Rebecca, represents this type of struggle between her change in social class, teaching readers to not let society and power change you for the worst.

Track the literary devices that stand out to you and relate them to the concepts. You need a minimum of 3 literary connections. Remember, this is not a list! You need to specifically track what devices Du Maurier uses and how they impact meaning.

Imagery
One of the main literary concepts Du Maurier uses is Imagery. The author uses Imagery to describe in detail parts of her life. This extreme detail allows for reflection by the main character, which contributed to not only the point of view, but the perspective of the reader. Imagery is used to raise suspicion, describe her feeling, and even foreshadow what is to come.

Symbolism
The author uses symbolism all through out the novel to connect the main characters life to her relationships, conflicts, and even thoughts. Mainly, the author uses symbolism to connect Ms. De Winters old life and new life, to express the theme: coming of age.

Foreshadowing
The author uses many devices to serve as a foreshadow through out the novel. For example, when describing in detail the setting Ms. De Winters first time at the new estate, the water and weather is describes. This foreshadows the future of the novel. The other also uses details to foreshadow what is to come.

This contributed the the them coming of age, and serves as a lesson to many. By comparing how this theme is expressed differently to other novels we have read, it can help me prepare for the HL Essay/Paper 1.
