“Using Systematic Instruction and Graphic Organizer to Teach Science Concepts to Students with Autism Spectrum Disorders and Intellectual Disability”

It discuss about the effectiveness of using graphing organizer with the help of systematic instruction to teach student with disability. The research somehow, gave me ideas for my microteaching, so I am interested to study more about the article. Here I include the article for you to read along with my reflection. 

Important aspects in writing lesson plan is:

a)      Objective and learning outcomes

b)      Instruction and material

c)       Time allocation

Lesson plan template is included below.

a)      The desired outcomes of learning.

b)      Define the purpose of an educational plan.

c)       Example – Understanding cell structure and function.

Learning outcome

a)      Describe how the student can achieve the stated objective

b)      Need to be specific and communicated in behavioral term the expected performance of the student.

c)       Example –At the end of the lesson, student should be able to: draw and label animal cell.

Success criteria

a)      Success criteria need to be stated on the white board

b)      It is the expected outcome at the end of the lesson

c)       Must be detailed out and specific, based on the expectation of student.

d)      Example- Student should be able to draw and label animal cell individually on worksheet. 

Induction set

a)      Purpose- to catch student attention and interest on the topic to be taught.

b)      Example: demonstration, video, storytelling and analogy.

c)       Relates to the topic to be taught to develop better understanding on the topic.

Development stage

a)      Teacher presents the lesson.

b)      Students-centered learning.

c)       Use learning aids.

Activities

a)      Purpose- for student to understand more on subject matter.

b)      Can be used as method for evaluation 

We will be assess through on-going assessments, so there will be no final exam. However, there are three main project for this subject which is firstly, microteaching, which needed us to do 20 minutes teaching of a certain topic from form 4 or form 5 biology syllabus. Next is course design project that require us to work in a group to design a course targeting a specific group. And lastly is E-portfolio where we bring together all that we have learned and discovered from this course into a report. 

The weightage for each assessment is as below;

a)       Written review - 10%     

b)      Test                        - 15% x 2

c)       Micro-teaching - 30%

d)      Course design    - 20%

e)      E-portfolio          -10%

-          Flexible in teaching

a)       Tyler’s/ objective model

b)      The interaction/dynamic model

c)       Taba’s model

d)      Contemporary model

All of these model stressed on 4 main aspect which is the;

-          The objectives

-          The content

-          The method

-          The evaluation.

But there is also some differences in term of the execution of the model and few additional steps in the current one like in Taba’s model and contemporary model. We also discuss on the strength and weaknesses each models exhibits.

These models not only can be applied in curriculum instruction for academic purpose, they can also be used to develop courses for different type of field for example, industries, and stakeholders and can be used to cater different age group.

CIPP model is a comprehensive framework used to guide evaluation in many types of set. 

There are three types of instructional objectives learnt which are Mager format for instructional objectives, instructional objectives proposed by Grondlund and Bloom’s instructional objectives. 

According to Mager, objectives must be observable and measurable in term of student behavior, testing situation in which the condition under which the behavior will be observed and performance criteria, which means the standard acceptable. 

Meanwhile, Grondlund says there are general objectives and specific objectives to be met during instruction. As for Bloom, the instructional objective must cater all three domain which is cognitive domain, psychomotor domain and affective domain
