We’ve experienced intercultural understanding in our language classes. We’ve also experienced global engagement in our 6th grade class when we read A Long Walk to Water and did the fundraiser to earn money for a well in Africa, EF trips, exchange students.

We discussed Global Engagement and defined engagement as interacting with different communities and cultures, even when they are different from our own. We also included the idea that engagement is more than understanding others and includes knowing the challenges of others and taking steps to make changes.

We discussed what global engagement meant. Kids shared an experience they had with global engagement. They talked about the foreign language they are taking in class. We also discussed the picture and how it's important to be understanding of people's lives.

Our SOAR class discussed how we understand and experience International Mindedness at Signal. We talked about our different language classes, our different cultures both at school and in the world. We talked about how learning different languages can help in many ways. We were surprised that the picture shown at the beginning was in the US.

My 6th graders plan to learn about different cultures/languages/countries in their language acquisition classes, empathize with those who are learning English as a second language, and work on ways to engage with all different kinds of people.

We talked about how we welcome international students to our school every year, how we're encouraged to learn another language, and also how cultural differences can be a struggle, for example we use a lot of figurative language here in the US while that is not the case in many other countries.

Seventh graders experienced Walk for Water last year and learned that it is difficult for many families in other countries to obtain water. They also had the language carousel last year and learned about the differences between French, German, and Spanish cultures.

My students were eager to talk about our exchange students. They enjoy becoming friends with our exchange students and learning about their cultures. At Signal, our students study foreign languages and engage in global activities such as Model UN, YIG, and Leo Club.

We think that SMMHS provides many opportunities for global engagement through Model UN, YIG etc. But we could learn more about global issues if there was more diversity in our student population.

Most students found it easiest to discuss multilingualism. Our class is blessed to have 3 international students, one of whom speaks four languages.

Students said...

We learned about how people had to do stuff to survive on their own.

We learned that there is still modern-day poverty with people who have less than we do.

When we complain about something that we don't have, think about the people who have so little to live on.

We can do something about global issues.

We need to be open-minded to those people who don't have as much as we do.

No contribution is too small--it all helps!!!
