Today I will be reviewing the book Legend by Marie Lu. This books genre is fiction. In the book, Day, a mysterious criminal appears to kill Metias, the brother of Republic prodigy June. This causes her to be very angry with him, and ultimately catch Day. Before Day's execution, she discovers that he did not actually kill her brother, and helps him escape. That is the book Legend by Marie Lu.

I would rank this book a 4 out of 5 stars. I gave this book 4 stars because it is a very good book. One problem though was that the book was hard to answer questions about, so it lost a star. In conclusion, I would recommend this book. This is because it had a very interesting story, and overall was very good.

Book Review Link: nytimes.com/2011/12/04/books/review/legend-by-marie-lu-book-review.html

The book Legend by Marie Li was reviewed by Ridley Pearson of the New York Times. He seemed very fond of the book, saying that, "Legend not only survives the hype, it deserves it" (Pearson). In his review, Pearson talks about the plot of the book, why he likes the book, talks very descriptively about the characters, and what he doesn't like about the book. That is Ridley Pearson's review of the book Legend by Marie Lu.

I agree with Ridley's review of the book. He does a very good job of explaining the plot and characters. He also has fair criticism of the book. Although it was a very good and descriptive review of the book, I did not learn anything. He did not teach me anything new in his review of the book. That is why I agree with his review of the book Legend by Marie Lu.

Element 3: Universal Theme

A universal theme is a theme that applies to all people, regardless of culture, race, and everything else. A universal theme in this book is that trust is easy to lose, but hard to get. This is shown when June says, "The plague patrol is coming for your family. They're taking them away" (Lu 145). This shows the universal theme because she very easily throws away the trust Day has in her and completely stabs him in the back. This theme is universal because trust is needed everywhere. You trust certain people around you with everything. That is why the universal theme in Legend is that trust is easy to lose, but hard to get.

Another reason the universal theme in Legend is that trust is easy to lose and hard to get is how much June has to go through to regain Day's trust. June has to find the patriots and ask, "I want to help Day escape before his execution" (Lu 266). This shows that June has to do this and then actually help him escape, which is way harder than the way she threw away his trust. This universal theme is relevant in our world today because we put a certain amount of trust in everyone around us. Whether its a lot or none, trust is a very important thing all the time, which is why it is a univeral theme.

Element 4: Character Analysis

A primary character in Legend by Marie Lu is Day. Day is arguably the most important character in the book, and some chapters are in his point of view. In the book, Day shows many traits, some of which are that he is caring, athletic, and intelligent. In Day's trial he, "Got the same score did: 1500/1500" (Lu 187). This quote shows his traits because the trial tests athleticism and intelligence, so if he got a perfect score, he is clearly that. That is a primary character in Legend.

The primary character Day has many motivations and affects the story's events and other characters. At the beginning of the book, a, "Third vertical line," is sprayed on his family's door (Lu 10). This shows his motivation for the hospital break in because the three lined X represents somebody in his family having the plague, which is why he broke in. Day also affects the story's events and other characters often throughout the book. One of these instances is when his, "Knife hits Metias hard in the shoulder" (Lu 33). This event affects the story because it is why June comes after him and why she catches him. Those is the primary character Day's motivations and how he affects the story's events and other characters.

I cannot relate to the primary character Day. Although we have some similarities, like intelligence and athleticism, we are very different. For example, Day lives in very poor housing and often has to live off of scraps. This is different from me because I am well fed and live in a nice house. Another reason I cannot relate is that I have never been a wanted criminal. That is why I cannot relate to the character Day in Legend by Marie Lu.
