Puritanism was a movement for religious reform between the 16th and 17th centuries. The movement started in Europe and moved to the United States. It moved to the U.S. when a group of people moved to one of the colonies in hope to create a "pure" city where they could practice their beliefs. Puritanism caused the increase of witch trials. This is because witches were considered impure and the bible was against them.

Those who were accused to be witches were put under trial. Many people who didn't like their neighbors or what not would accuse them of witchery. This caused a lot of random people to be put under trial and for the whole thing to be blown out of proportion. There were many tests conducted to decide if a person was a witch. One of those ways included torture.

Those convicted of being witches faced a number of punishments. Most witches were put to death though. The witches were put to death in a number of ways. Burning at the stake was not one of those ways though and it is a myth that they were. The only way a witch wouldn't be killed is if they admitted to being a witch.

McCarthyism is the practice of making accusations of treason, etc. Many believe this was ruining society. McCarthyism was a common cause for people to be accused of Witch craft. Random people could accuse people of being witches and they would be put on trial. Eventually witch trials stopped because they were clearly very innaccurate and random.
