The movement started in Europe and moved to the United States. It moved to the U.S. when a group of people moved to one of the colonies in hope to create a "pure" city where they could practice their beliefs. Puritanism caused the increase of witch trials. This is because witches were considered impure and the bible was against them.

McCarthyism was a common cause for people to be accused of Witch craft. Random people could accuse people of being witches and they would be put on trial.
