Today was a very relaxed first day. Arriving at 8, the first thing we did was tour the entire clinic grounds. After, I focused on reading up on the organization and learning about their objectives, services, and the people behind everything. The main objective of the day, was to support the diaper program. With a group of another volunteers, they welcomed me to help organize everything for the incoming family’s. For 5 hours, family’s who needed it would stop by to pick up diapers and wipes for their children. One skill I practiced throughout the entirety of the program, was the usage of my Spanish to explain exactly what participants would be signing. - 10:30 hours

The second day on the job, was also a light day. A very important step in this internship was to shadow a mentor, and I shadowed the senior medical assistant/vaccine coordinator. I witnessed a variety of different medical assets being used such as storage for vaccines, interpreters for different languages, measurement devices for children, and finally the actual needles. Following procedures, I watched as he comforted children to give out vaccines and routine check ups. A problem that was solved throughout the process was when the power was cut out, and we had to go assist in getting it back on, with the assistance of an electrical team.

The second part of the day was a good experience in the background management of the medical field. I was helping the clinic manager with some paperwork from the day. An interaction that took place was how she carefully explained to me how she wanted things to be completed and organized. We had to separate papers into several different piles based on the information on them, while she gathered the finished papers to send them off to the clinic. She also aided me in working with printing materials that were essential to the organization of the clinic. - 10:00 hours

The third day consisted entirely of background operations that contribute to the flow of the workplace. It was my first time attending a team “huddle.” These huddles are for both sides of the clinic - ACC(acute care clinic) and Continuity to fully understand and be able to engage efficiently with the plan for the day. The clinic manager was the leader, communicating subjects such as patient expectancy, people who would not be showing up, and main problems of the day. Observing this was fundamental in my idea of being a leader in a group.

The second part of the third day was an extremely busy one. In total, the clinic was expecting upwards of 60 patients throughout the day. However, only about 48 showed up. I took special instructions from the clinic manager to help assess problems such as malfunctioning technology, actively seeking out other supervisors and asking if they needed help, and fix mountains of paper that had become disorganized. In all, today was a stressful day. 10:00

The 4th day at my internship was almost identical to the very first day. Being that it was a Wednesday, another diaper run was scheduled. I think that in the days so far of my internship, the highlight would already have to be the diaper run days. Giving back to the community, especially the ones that need it most is very important. While doing stuff that you are asked for can be difficult to understand at first, to be very honest a personal challenge and theme throughout the internship is the consistency needed. Especially when we are in the health industry and things must be neatly organized, it is essential to make sure you are on task as much as possible.

On the fourth day as well, I took initiative especially in the practice of asking questions. For example, a question that I asked one of the residents was “how did you get into this job?” I also followed up with “what would you say your biggest recommendation is for someone to get into the health industry?” Lastly, I asked about their advice on how I could personally improve, based on what they have seen from me so far. All of these questions were vital in gaining insight into the medical field, and also gaining another perspective about myself. 10:00

The fifth day was a unique experience. It was unique because representatives for Stanford Hospital were scheduled to come in. People such as the director of residency training program, the senior vice president, director of ambulatory services at Lucille Packard, practice administrator at Lucile Packard, and the chief of pediatrics, and the vice president of ambulatory service at Lucille Packard children’s hospital. I got to just say hello to a few, as they only passed me one time. It was a very good experience, as I was able to observe how down to earth they were.

Other than the representatives coming to the clinic, it was otherwise a very relaxed day. One new experience that I had, was being able to experiment with the interpreter. I explored its uses, and helped escort it to a patients room. I also helped the clinic manager again with sorting through paperwork, such as organizing and stapling things. After organizing the papers, I was asked to take them to the different clinics, the ACC and continuity clinic. 10:00

Today was the last day. It started out like any other day, relaxed in the office. Since it was a Friday, everyone had brought snacks in a “potluck” style. After eating some snacks, I quickly got to work with organizing Papers for my mentor. She requested things organized based on how filled out they are, if they have a sticker of identification, or if they were fax. Once that finished, I was given the opportunity to help sanitize everything. Starting in the offices, I quickly used alcohol wipes to clean everything, ending in the clinic exam rooms.
