I like a system for diverse classrooms would be breaking down some of the barriers between subjects. Rather than an hour of maths and then an hour of science, merging related subjects would allow various different teaching methods to be employed and for more diverse learning patterns to be supported.

Extending knowledge can very much occur in diverse ways if students are given the options to research and learn in self-directed ways using diverse tools. Small presentations from teachers on a topic could lead into teacher guided/assisted self-directed learning using videos/podcasts/books/websites etc etc etc and then each student can learn new knowledge according to their preferred systems.

Honestly, I believe it can be as simple as "ask and answer". This would obviously mean cultivating an environment in which students are comfortable and experienced in expressing their opinions and not considering having a lesson that didn't teach them something as their own failure. But if you're willing to do that ground work, it should be as easy as asking them or asking them to mark your teaching via rubrics you provide etc.

I think best practice is always going to evolve out of change. Any method that I like and keep using will tire after a while. I'll become passive in it and my students will become used to it. I like to always be on my feet, trying new things, working with successful things for a while but not getting complacent, even with the good stuff!
